In a fitting manner, the contest will pit a pair of old backyard rivals, as the Fighting Scots host the Lakers of Mercyhurst College. the two hooked up in a memorable battle on November 29, with the homestanding Lakers outlasting the Bora, 90-86 in double overtime. Following this evening's game, the Scots will take a brief break to enjoy Christmas before competing in the prestigious Capital Key Classic in Albany, NY on December 28-30. times overall. In addition, the Scots have reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs three times. Edinboro has won twenty-or-more games five times under Walcavich, including a 26-8 finish in 1997-98, the most wins in school history. Overall, Walcavich has a record of 341-165 and is in his 18th season as a head coach. Karl Fogel is in his fifth season in charge of the Mercyhurst program, and his 16th season as a head coach. The Lakers are 60-54 under his tutelage. His overall record, including an eight-year stint at Division I Northeastern, is 224-196. THE BORO-MERCYHURST SERIES SCOUTING THE SCOTS Edinboro leads the all-time series by a 3418 margin. The Fighting Scots seek to keep intact a streak that has seen the home team win in each of the previous seven meetings. Boro head coach Greg Walcavich enjoys a 13-5 ledger against the Lakers. Mercyhurst looks for the first season sweep by either team since 1995-96, when Edinboro captured both meetings. The last time Mercyhurst swept both games occurred in 1978-79. Edinboro brings a record of 4-2 into the contest, having lost played on December 11 at Gannon. Thanks to a 96-79 defeat to the Golden Knights, this is Edinboro's lone opportunity to knock off one of its Erie rivals. Edinboro does own a triumph over Allegheny, another local foe ... the scots continue to play an up-tempo style, averaging 88.0 ppg., with just two games in the 70's. The Bora is also taking full advantage of the three-point arc, canning 54 of 131 long distance bombs. Edinboro had outrebounded its first five opponents before losing the board battle to Gannon. The Scots still own a +8.5 rebound margin ... Sophomore forward Kennv Tate leads the team in both scoring (20.5 ppg.) and rebounding (10.3 rpg.). He has had three double doubles ... Adam Kautman and Jean Paul open at guard. Kaufman, a 5'11" junior, is the consummate floor general. While averaging 11.2 ppg., he has handed out 61 assists with just 9 turnovers, and also leads the team with 15 steals. He has made 17 of 34 three-pointers. Paul, meanwhile, is a 6'4" sixth-year senior with a sweet jumper. He had career-highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds in the first meeting with Mercyhurst. On the year, he averages 17.3 points and 6.2 rebounds ... another juco transfer is 6'4" junior Kellb Allen. The former JUCO All-American has boosted his averages to 12.8 ppg. and 6.7 rpg ... Jason Roseto opens at center. The 6'10", 255 lbs. freshman has already blocked 24 shots, including 9 vs. Allegheny. He averages 4.7 ppg. and 5.2 rpg. THE IAST MEmNG In one of the more exciting contests locally in several years, Mercyhurst outlasted the boro in double overtime, 90-86, on November 29. The Lakers used a 14-2 run in the second extra session to post the victory, despite an incredible 114 shots by the Scots. Edinboro converted just 29.8 percent, negating a 67-57 rebounding edge and 25 Hurst turnovers. Kenny Tate (27 points) and Jean Paul (26) were the lone Scots in double digits, with Tate pulling down 16 rebounds and Paul 13. Mercyhurst featured four double figure scorers. Brent Swain had 22 points, 19 rebounds and 7 blocks, with Richard Bradley contributing 17 markers and Tim Fesko 16. Matt Thielker added 15 points. THE COACHES Edinboro mentor Greg Walcavlch is in his 11th season, posting a record of 187-103 during that period. He broke the Edinboro record for coaching victories last year. Leading the way is Adam Kaufman, who stands second in assists with an average of 10.2 per game. Newcomer Kenny Tate has made his presence felt in a big way. The sophomore forward ranks among the nation's leaders in both scoring and assists. He is 38th in scoring at 20.5 ppg., and 19th in rebounding at 10.3 rpg. Freshman Jason Roseto is third in blocked shots, swatting away 4.0 shots per game. He has 24 blocks in all. Mercyhurst invades McComb Fieldhouse having lost three of its last four games. In fact, the Lakers' last win came against Edinboro in the double overtime thriller ... Mercyhurst suffered an 85-79 loss at undefeated Mansfield on Wednesday despite having four players in double figures ... one player not in double digits was Tim Fesko. The guard was recently diagnosed with mononucleosis and will not play tonight. He burned the Scots for 16 points in the first meeting and was averaging 9.5 ppg ... Mercyhurst is a perfect SO at home, but 0-3 on the road ... the Lakers of coach Karl Fogel showcase three players averaging in double figures. Sophomore guard Richard Bradley leads the way at 16.3 ppg. He is also the team-leader in steals (18) and stands second in assists (26). However: Bradley has struggled with his shot, converting 38.4 percent from the floor and 23.1 per~ent (12 of 52) from beyond the three-point arc ... Brent Swain averages a double-double with 11.0 ppg. and 10.8 rpg. He also ranks among the national leaders in blocked sh~ts with 23 ... sophomore Jamal Holley comes in at 10.3 ppg. with 12 triples ... Fogel has used the same starting lineup all eight games. Junior Joel Burgei will open at forward. He averages 8.5 ppg. and 5.5 rpg. Matt Thielker (6.1 ppg., 31 asts.), one of only two seniors on the team, is the Laker point guard ... Fogel has come up with a strong recruiting class, featuring freshmen Dion Brown, Scott Melle and Jarron Hinton. Brown, a 67" forward, averages 7.4 ppg. and 4.8 rpg. while shooting a team-high 57.9 percent from the floor. Melle, a 6'8", 225 lb. forward, comes in at 6.0 ppg. and 4.1 rpg. BENCH BRIGADE The Boro bench has made solid contributions. Leading the way is freshman sharpshooter David Gartrell, who is averaging 6.8 ppg. with 10 of 19 three's.
