But as he /j enter^ tiie 1992-93 campaign, the veteran coach wants only win...the one tn^t will propel his club to the ' Pen^ylvania State Athletic Conference championship N. an^nto the NCAA Division II national tournament. ', We’ve come as close as you can (to winning the . coMerence title),” says Walcivich. “We’ve finished ^cond in each of the last three years. We could have Wn it at some point in the last three years, but we haven’t been able to do that. “I would like to be able to win t^,ie (PSAC) West, and I would like for us to be able to go ihto the four team /playoff and win that, and I’d like t^be able to get to the NCAA’s. But we really have a diffic^^lt time setting our goals beyond winning the West, becadse we haven’t been able to do that.” ^ And winning the West this season certainly won’t be an easy task. Not with the likes of Slippery J^ck, lUP, Lock Haven, Clarion and Shippensburg ail figuring to be vastly improved, to say nothing of defending PSAC But the good news for Walcavich is that he returns his most experienced group including guard Adam Cheek, the Boro’s leading scorer and a unanimous PSAC West First Team pick last year. Other returnees include seniors Greg Fox, Sam Dickerson and Junior Simpson; juniors Lasana Crider, Ron Santiago and Exavier Zollicoffer; and fi*eshman Keith Perry. Cheek, a 6-foot 2-inch senior, averaged 20.5 points per game last season and established several school records, including most points in a season (594). For his efforts, he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-East Region Second Team. Cheek is also the Scots’ top returning rebounder (6.7 rpg). X. Joining Cheek in the ba(^court will be the versatile Fox, who dished out 103 assists last year (second on the team to graduated point guard Derek Walton). At 6-0, Fox scored 3.4 points per game a year ago. The 510 Santiago (2.0 ppg, 1.2 apg) will add depth at the guard spot. Up front, the 6-9 Simpson gets the nod at center, after posting a team-high 49 blocks. Simpson, who has been plagued by 'We really have a difficult time setting our goals beyond injuries throughout his winning the West, because we haven't been able to do that." Heading that list of hopefuls are man. " I don’t know that we and California can’t be Zollicoffer (6-3), Dickerson (6-6), Pehy (6-4) and better but I would guess that everybody else feels like newcomers Alex Boyden and Sean Gibson. The slate includes NCAA Division II powers Pittsburgh, will see their first action this season. Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks, PSAC East Gibson was the Scots' second-leading scorer in 1990-91, foes Cheyney and Millersville, as well as rivals Gannon averaging 14!4 points per contest. and Mercyhurst. Edinboro begins its quest to reach the national “I doubt that you could find a time in Edinboro history playoffs for the first time since 1986, with a trip to that the schedule has been as demanding as it will be Alaska to take on the University of Alaska-Anchorage this year,” admits Walcavich. “And I am certain that you and Alaska-Fairbanks beginning Nov. 20. The Scots couldn’t find a four-year period in a row where the open their home slate Nov. 30 against Point Park. schedule has been as demanding as ours has been.” 1
