Situated on a sprawling 585-acre campus in the scenic resort community of Edinboro, the College is within 1CX) miles of the educational and cultural centers of Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. It is just 15 miles south of Erie, the third largest city in Pennsylvania, and easily accessible from all directions by interstates 79, 80 and 90. Having provided 125 years of service, Edinboro has the distinction of being the second normal school established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in the United States. Beginning July, 1983 the College will undergo one of the most significant changes in its history when it becomes the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania of the State System of Higher Education. It has grown to more than forty buildings including the 350,000-volume Baron-Forness Library, a modern seven-story structure which serves as a focal point for the spacious campus. More than 5,800 students repre senting almost every county in the Commonwealth, as well as numerous states and foreign countries attend Edinboro. Its tradition of educational service and research is matched by a distinguished faculty, more than two-thirds of whom have earned doctoral degrees. The College now offers more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and associate degree programs, a diversity unmatched by any other college or university in north western Pennsylvania. While seeking to meet the educa tional needs of its region from both a professional and cultural standpoint, Edinboro now makes contributions in the fields of education, government, environmental improve ment, urban and rural problems, crime prevention, and service to business and industry. Recent program develop ments include those in the high-demand areas of allied health, business administration, communications, com puter technology, nursing, and various pre-professional offerings such as law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and veterinary science. Numerous student internships provide additional examples of the College's efforts to create a close working relationship with the people it serves while, at the same time, offering students intellectual and career opportunities. Edinboro has initiated an All-College Honors Program to provide challenging and enriched learning experiences for academically gifted students. Undergraduate students are encouraged to strive for academic excellence both in their major fields and in other disciplines. Honors students pursue studies that are greater in depth and scope than those required of other undergraduates. Although the costs for attending ESC rank among the lowest in the Commonwealth, over $8,000,000 in financial aid is available annually to eligible students. Students are admitted to the College in September, January, or at the beginning of each summer session and are considered for admission on the basis of their general scholarship, nature of secondary program, and SAT or ACT scores. 3- BUILDING A RESPECTED CHALLENGER... Athletic Director - Jim McDonald Edinboro State's athletic program was placed under new leadership on July 1, 1981 with the appointment of Jim McDonald, a health and physical education professor, as the college's athletic director. Edinboro President Foster Diebold named McDonald on the basis of his aggressive leadership capabilities and his anticipated role to increase fundraising activities for the Scots' athletic program. The newly appointed athletic director made immediate changes in the Scots' athletic program by adding women's cross country and men's volleyball to increase Edinboro's offerings to 16 men and women's intercollegiate sports. To make the Scots competitive at the NCAA Division II level, he also kicked off the College's first major fund raising campaign for student athletic scholarships. He emphasized the fact that scholarship support was the athletic pro gram's major challenge and set a $100,000 goal that the staff would work toward by fall of 1982. Through his efforts more than $160,000 has been raised for the Fighting Scots general scholarship fund. From this amount $110,000 will be distributed directly to ESC men and women athletes while the remainder pro vides scholarship aid through interest which the money generates. A major thrust of this campaign is the Curly Halmi Fund which had an originally established goal of $20,000 less than a year ago and now totals $28,000 with additional amounts forthcoming. Another significant McDonald fund raising project has been his Century Club organization which permits Scot fans admittance to athletic contests in addition to offering recreational activi ties in McComb Fieldhouse. Under McDonald's first-year reign Edinboro's summer camp program has grown from two offerings to include seven different interest areas. In addition to the annual Buffalo Bills-Cleveland Browns scrimmage at Sox Harrison -4- Stadium as well as the pre-season drills of the Pitt Panthers, Duquesne University and six area high schools make Edinboro their camp home. McDonald has con structed six new football fields to accommodate these needs and the Football Camp of Champions that attracts more than 350 young gridders. The personable athletic director also staged Edinboro's first Hall of Fame fesivities that featured the induction of 18 charter members. These past athletes, coaches and indivi duals who have promoted the cause of Fighting Scot athletics were honored at a banquet where more than 500 attendees witnessed their inductions. McDonald has been at Edinboro State since 1962 and for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Conference crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27 ESC records and made 19 post-season appearances while four of his players were named All-Americans. Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald served as assistant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1965 graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia. In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a master's degree in health from the University of Buffalo. He has done doctoral work in sports science at West Virginia University. As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPl basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the second leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's AllTournament Team in 1959 and 1960. in 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the Year by the eastern seaboarc) coaches and that same year was honored as one of t^'e top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and membership in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He served four years on the NAIA's All-American selection committee and was chosen by the NAIA to coach an All-American team of NBA-bound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel's Hapoel Games. His all-star coaching assignment brough additional recogni tion to Edinboro as the College was named as the team's official training site. In addition to his classroom and basketball coaching duties, McDonald was Edinboro State's golf coach for 17 years during which his teams won over 40 tournaments and finished as high as 3rd place at the NCAA Division II National Tournament. He was twice selected District Coach of the Year in golf. As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of extensive community involvement. He was Little League Baseball Director for four years and for the past two years, has been a member of the General McLane School Board. He and his wife, Mary Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike, and Matthew. CONTI’S CLUBS “GET RESPECT” ladder in ESC's grid program moving from freshman coach to receiver coach and finally to offensive coordinator. Conti and his wife, Jan, have four children - Kim, a senior at Robert Morris College; Kurt; Craig, a freshman at the University of Iowa; and Kelly, a senior at McDowell High School in Erie. Head Coach - Guy Conti The 1981-82 cage season proved to be a successful one for Edinboro Head Coach Guy Conti. Not only did Conti lead the Fighting Scots to a 22-8 record, a Pennsylvania Conference - Western crown, and a berth in the NCAA Division II East Regional, but he won his 1(X)th game as well. Conti, who has compiled a 105-77 record in seven seasons at ESC, led the 1975-76 Scots to a 24-5 record in his initial season. He guided Edinboro to three tournament championships, the PC-West title, the NAIA District 18 Championship, and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. His team also set an ESC record with 13 consecutive victories. His next three seasons were not quite as successful as his first. The Fighting Scots finished 11-12 in 1976-77, 9-15 in 1977-78, and 11-14 in 1978-79. He turned things around the next year, and guided the Scots to a 21-6 slate, and a spot in the NAIA District 18 playoffs. 1980-81 was a rebuilding year as Conti lost four starters. The Scots finished with a 7-17 record, but came on strong at the end of the season to make the PC-West playoffs. The Freeport, Pa. native graduated from Clarion State College in 1965. He guided the ESC baseball team for two years. In that time, Conti assembled a talent-laden team that recorded the best record in the school's history. He then served as an assistant football coach for four years. He quickly climbed the -5- SCOTS HOPE TO REPEAT AS PC-WEST CHAMPS Edinboro State Head Coach Guy Conti is hoping for another successful season. After all, he has four starters returning and four other lettermen back from a squad that went 22-8, won the Pennsylvania Conference Western Division, and finished third in the NCAA Division II Eastern Regionals. Returning to the hardwood for the Scots is senior point guard Steve Senko. The Philadelphia standout netted 392 points for a 13.1 average. He also dished out 150 assists and had 69 thefts, four shy of the record set by Nick Brascetta in the 1979-80 season. ESC's top rebounder, forward Land Battle, is also back. The senior from Toledo pulled down missed shots at a 10.4 average, 19th in the nation. Battle also scored 368 points for a 12.3 average. Edwin Wright, last year's other starting guard, is expected to be a big part of the Scot's offense in 1982-83. Wright scored 315 points last year for a 10.5 average. Brian Simmons, the "Duke of De fense," is also back for his final season as a Scot. The Fort Wayne product scored 223 points and ripped down 174 rebounds. Other veterans expected to aid the Scots include Willie Lee (5-5, guard from Clewiston, Florida), who scored 147 points off the bench, and Barry Marshall (6-5, forward), who had 63 rebounds, 80 points, and 24 blocked shots. John Luca, a three-year letter winner, who came off the bench to contribute 44 points and 40 rebounds. Mike Albert (6-9, center) is back for Edinboro coming off an injury plagued season. Albert had shoulder problems all year and saw very limited action. Conti said, "I'm very pleased THE 1982-83 FIGHTING SCOTS with the progress of Mike. He could be a big factor." Also returning for the Scots are Brian Sharick (6-1, guard). Derrick Burton (6-6, forward), and Julius Holman (6-1, guard). Conti had another banner recruiting year. He picked up three freshmen from the Cleveland area and one from Toledo. Jose' Davis (5-11, guard), averaged 22 points and four assists for Cleveland Shaw last year. Davis' teammate, William Jeffries (6-5, forward), also made the trek across the OhioPennsylvania line. Jeffries averaged 10 points and eight rebounds for Shaw last year. Brian Duffy (6-4, forward), is expected to give Conti's troops added depth at the forward. Duffy recorded impressive numbers while at Cleveland St. Joseph. He averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, and 7.0 rebounds per game. Toledo product Seaborn "C.B." White (6-7, center), is going to be counted on to give Edinboro more muscle underneath. Conti thinks Slippery Rock and California, along with Edinboro, will be the teams to watch in the PC-West. "Clarion will be down a little from previous years, and Lock Haven and Indiana will be young but competitive." The Erie area teams will once again give north western Pennsylvania fans some excitement. "Gannon has the talent to beat anybody on any given night. Behrend will rebound from a subpar season and have a very good year, and Mercyhurst is a very young and talented team and could give many teams trouble," Conti stated.
