Pogue President The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has been celebrating its 50th season of organized competition throughout the 2000-01 academic year. Throughout the year, the conference has been releasing its "50 Greatest Moments" by the league schools and a list of eight "Student-Athlete Success Stories" from each school. The planning for what is currently the PSAC was developed when the Board of College Presidents' Athletic Committee of the Pennsylvania State Teachers Colleges met to discuss ways to improve and strengthen athletic competition among the colleges. On September 20, 1951 the Pennsylvania State Teachers Colleges Athletic Conference was formed in conjunction with its first official league meeting. During the 1951-52 season, five champions were crowned in their respective sports. Soccer (Lock Haven), football (Bloomsburg) and basketball (Lock Haven) all earned titles based on a points system. Wrestling (Millersville) and track and field (West Chester) continued to follow the "state" championship competition systems that were already in place. The "state" championships in track and field began in 1928, while wrestling was established in 1940. The name of the conference has changed twice since its inception. The word "Teachers" was dropped in 1960 when the member institutions all dropped it from their respective school names, as the league became known as the Pennsylvania State Colleges Athletic Conference. In 1983, all PSCAC schools were granted university status with the formation of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. The league has since been known as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The conference currently sponsors 20 sports, 10 for both men and women. The 10 men's sports that exist today have been part of the conference structure since 1960, with swimming being the final addition. Due to an expanding interest, in 1977 the con ference was restructured to provide for women's athletics. The current structure of PSAC women's sports was complete with the addition of soccer in 1994. Since the conference was formed in 1951, each member selected its own compet itive division within the NCAA. In 1980, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire con ference to Division II. Though it remains that way, nine schools still elect to participate on the Division I level in various sports. To date, the PSAC claims 31 team champions and 164 individual winners in NCAA competition. The conference has grown to its current status in excess of 5,000 studentathletes and 300 coaches. The final 16 seconds may have been the most thrilling sporting spectacle ever to be contested inside Hollinger Field House. Training 63-62 after Cheyney's Anthony Frazier converted two free throws, WCU's Ramzee Stanton was fouled with :16 to go. Stanton made one of two, but Corbin grabbed the rebound. Thinking they were trailing by a point, Cheyney fouled Robert Williams, but Williams missed the front end of the one-and-one. Joe Meade stripped the rebound from Cheyney's Hassan Mohammed, and then watched as the carom went to Corbin for an easy layup. Cheyney called time, then saw Frazier break free in the lane for a game-tying layup, only to see the ball bounce off the rim and out of the hoop as the buzzer sounded. ♦ WCU owns a 5-2 all-time mark vs. Edinboro, including a win W, 91-56 W, 78-60 February 3 WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY 2000-01 Statistics G-GS MIN M/G FG-FGA Pet. 3FG-3FGA Pet.
