The Mace Derived from the French masse, or club, the mace was once a fierce battle weapon used during the Middle Ages. Over time it lost its war like image and became a symbol of peaceful leadership when kings removed the spikes from their maces and encrusted them with jewels and precious metals for ceremonial use. Since then, the mace has been used in ceremonial processions as a symbol of authority. Lock Haven University has two maces fashioned from the wood from old Sullivan Hall, which once stood on the present site of Stevenson Library. Carried by co-marshals, the maces indicate that the activity is an official function of the university. The Medallion The Lock Haven University medallion is a symbol of the office of the president. The president wears the medallion with academic regalia at formal university ceremonies. The handcrafted medallion is a three dimensional sculpture crafted in bronze featuring the university 's original building, Price Hall. The chain bears the names of the university's twelve past presidents, as we ll as the four seals the uni versity has had since its founding in 1870. AClldemic Dress Academic dress, generally consisting of a gown, cap and hood, dates back to the Middle Ages when universities \-vere forming in England and other parts of Europe. Since universities grew out of church schools, the dress of the scholar was the dress of the cleric. The cut of the long gown, deri ved from the medieval robe, indicates the wearer's level of degree. The bachelor's gown, distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves. is worn closed. The master's gown is worn open or closed and has long, cut sleeves with a square base The doctoral gown, worn either open or closed, has full, round 10 sleeves and is embellished with velvet panels down the front of the gown and with velvet bands on the sleevcs. The velvet trim may be black or may indicate the wearer's field of study. Some institutions have unique doctoral gowns. The head covering evolved from the skullcap worn by the monks in cold weather. The skullcap acquired a point on top, which then evolved into a tassel. Today, the skullcap has been replaced by a mortarboard cap. Degree holders wear the tassel over the left front quarter and candidates wear the tassel over the right quarter until the degree is conferred. Those with doctorates often wear soft four- or six-sided velvet tams, usual ly with a gold tassel. Originally worn over the head to protect the monks from weather, the hood has evolved into the most significant part of the academic dress. Worn over the shoulders like a cowl, the hood varies in length and appearance according to the degree of the wearer. The bachelor's hood is three feet in length with a two-inch velvet border. The master's hood is three-and-a-half-feet long with a three-inch border. The doctoral hood is four feet in length with a five-inch border. The lining of the hood bears the colors of the college that conferred the wearer's degree, so that graduates of a particular institution may be recognized in the academic procession. The hood's velvet border indicates the wearer's academic field. Some of the colors worn by Lock Haven University faculty and staff for all academic purposes are associated with the following disciplines: White - Arts, Letters, Humanities Drab - Commerce, Accountancy, Business Light Blue - Education Brown - Fine Arts Crimson - Journalism Lemon - Library Science Pink - Music Silver-G ray - Oratory Dark Blue - Philosophy Sage Green - Physical Education Golden Yellow - Science Citron - Social Science Green - Medicine jj Pennsylvania State System of Highcr Education John C.
