State Normal School is the outgrowth of an Academy, first opened in 1851, two years after the laying out of the borough of California. A bill incorporating the California Academy with the privileges of a State Normal School was vetoed by Governor Packer in 1859. In 1865 the school was chartered under the name of" South-western Normal College." The corner-stone of the present Main Building: This Institution, usually called the" South-Western State Normal School," is one of eleven schools having the powers and privileges of State Normal Schools under the laws of Pennsylvania. in the State thirteen" There are Normal School Districts," In each of which, except the fourth and eleventh, a school has been established. first of these eleven schools to receive" recognition" The as a State Normal was the one at Millersville, Lancaster county, in 1859.
