Thirty-seven candidates have been working out for a number of weeks preparing for the opening game on Saturday, April 8, against East Stroudsburg. Twelve returning lettermen indicate that the team should have a fair amount of balance. A lot depends, of course, on how the untried sophomores shape up. The pitching staff at the moment is a question mark. Two lettermen-Bill Hunter and Bob Gibble-who both had 1-3 records last year and good E.R.A.'s are back along with junior Joe Walton. The leading hitters returning from last year are junior Jack Hollis (.417) and senior John Gara (.375). Although there are five or six candidates vying for the catching position, two mainstays who have the inside track at the moment are senior King Perry and junior Ben Pollock. All four infield positions will be sou_ght by returning players senior Steve Bilyk, and juniors Red Callahan, Harold Albertson, and Jerry Devlin. The outfield, in addition to Gara and Hollis, has juniors Pat Colgan and Jim Rupert back for another season along with Gene Gruber and Tom Taylor. The attitude and morale of the team have been excellent, which could result in a winning season for the Huskies. The biggest problems facing Coach Davies are his defensive infield and developing hitting power. Davies is in the process of attempting to schedule one or two practice games prior to the opening of this season. Davies will also be in charge of the freshman team and the varsity will again use the Light Street (Pa.) baseball field. BASEBALL SCHEDULE Varsity April 8-East Stroudsburg, 1 game .... A participant in numerous baseball clinics Davies doesn't merely tell how, he shows how in detail. A native of Pittsburgh, Davies received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Waynesburg College and his Master of Education degree from Duquesne University. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg State in 1964, he taught at Trinity High School, inĀ· the elementary and secondary schools of Willoughby, Ohio, and at Port Washington, Ohio. Davies has had a number of years in coaching football, basketball, and baseball both in the elementary and secondary schools of Willoughby and in the Armed Forces. During the 1964-65 season, he served as freshman basketball coach at B.S.C. and in the 1965-66 season assisted head coach Bob Norton in basketball. Davies, who replaced Dick Mentzer, is well-qualified to teach good baseball fundamentals to the players and thus help to continue to produce the fine baseball teams that have been associated with B.S.C. over the years.
