High School where his JV and varsity teams were 59-9 while winning county championships and participating in the PIAA District II play-offs. He also served as freshman coach at East Stroudsburg and guided the team to a 17-2 record. Chronister has been successful in attracting good basketball talent to Bloomsburg. He has coached two All-Americans, John Willis (1972-74) and Jerry Radocha (1974-77). Active in the National Coaches Association, he conducts his own BSC basketball school and has served as a guest lecturer at other schools and clinics in the East. Burt Reese Assistant Varsity Coach After coaching the Bloomsburg freshman teams to 83 victories against 27 defeats over a seven-year span, Burt Reese moved into a different role two years ago with the basketball program. In addition to working directly with Coach Chronister and the -varsity players, he continues to coordinate the basketball recruiting efforts which have been so successful at the college. He is considered by Coach Chronister as "one of the outstanding assistant coaches in the state". A native of Taylor, Pennsylvania, he received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State College. At ESSC he assisted in the basketball and tennis programs as a graduate assistant. After leaving ESSC, he joined the faculty of Old Forge (Pa.) High School where he was assistant basketball coach at Abington Heights High School, Clarks Summit (Pa.) for three and one half years. Reese has also been an extremely successful tennis coach at BSC having produced some outstanding teams over the past eight years. He and his wife Marion and their two year old daughter Meredith reside in Scenic Knolls near Bloomsburg. Michael Herbert Freshman Coach During the past 12 years, Dr. Michael Herbert has served in numerous capacities on the basketball staff, and he is in his third season as the freshman coach.· Along with this added responsibility, "Doc" continues to aid the varsity team as a practice and game assistant. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the game has been a significant asset to the overall cage program. A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, Herbert received his degrees at the University of Maryland and Lehigh University. He is a professor of Biology and also coaches women's tennis. He previously served as head golf coach and a number of years ago as head tennis c.oach. Gary Tyler, a former Husky standout (1972-75), is in his second year as an assistant JV coach. PROMISING PERFORMERS Miles Reitnouer, a 6'3" junior who was also a top JV last year (18 p.p.g.). The Reading forward is a good shooter and has good basketball sense. He'll also see plenty of play. Jeff Roth, a 6'2" junior from Lansdale who is up from the JV's. He has quick moves and is capable of getting a hot hand and is tough on defense. FRESHMEN Bill Tillman, a 6' 4" forward from Cranford, N .J., who is one of the best prospective recruits in recent years. Bill has good moves and leaping ability and is a capable scorer. A future Maroon and Gold star. Harry Warren, a 6'3" key bal I handler in last season's contests, is the team's other cocaptain. He scored an average of 6.0 p.p.g. while setting up many scoring plays for the team. He led the team last year in assists with an 8.2 averag·e . He is a strong rebounder for a guard. Jim Fertig, a 6'2" guard from Lansdale, is following in his brother Rick's footsteps (1960's). He is a good outside shooter, and his overall play should improve steadily as the season progresses. Tim Beish, a 6'5" forward who is another local Central Columbia product. Tim needs seasoning and should be helpful in inside shooting and on the boards. Al Williams, 6'5", was the second leading scorer on the team last season with a total of 363 points and a 75% free throw average. An excellent outside shooter, Al is a senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., who averaged 15.1 points per game and pulled down 141 rebounds in his junior year. RETURNING LETTERMEN Steve Bright, a 6'5" forward I center who was named to the Academic All-American team last season, returns in hopes of boosting his average of 9. 7 p. p.g. and 6.9 rebounds per contest. Steve, a senior cocaptain, was an area high school standout from Central Columbia. He's a hard worker under the boards and is a consecutive shooter from the field and the foul line. George Foering, a 5'1 O" sophomore from Lansdale who performed in 20 ·of the 29 games last season. A good feeder, he started on occasion and was third in assists with 64. Foering needs to improve on outside shooting. Jeff Slocum, a 6'5" senior from Clarks Summit who was a good off-the-bench scorer and rebounder in crucial situations . He could help inside scoring and possibly earn a starter's berth . John Bucher, a 6'3" junior who performed chiefly with the JV's last season (16 p.p.g.). He was good scoring power and is a rugged rebounder who will see a lot of action . Hometown is Ephrata. Bethlehem Shamokin Lebanon Newport Bloomsburg Clarks Summit OUTLOOK The 1977-78 cage campaign of Bloomsburg State College will undoubtedly have a "new look" on offense that will differ noticeably from previous Husky teams of Coach Charles Chronister. "Our plays and scoring will vary much more this year," Chronister states. "When we had All-American Jerry Radocha the last couple of years and All-American John Willis before that, we had the type of performer you can build an offense around. Now we have no particular standout, but a number of potentially good shooters, all of whom are capable of contributing double figures at any given time. We have made some apparent changes on both offense and defense. It should be an interesting year." In addition to Radocha, Chronister lost two other fine performers through graduation from last year's 17-7 team-Rich Evans, a good rebounder who is ninth in career points for SSC with 755, and Rick Joseph, who contributed 588 points in his career with the Huskies. Radocha is the college's leader in career points with 1778 after surpassing Willis' three-year career mark of 1467 points. The bright side of the picture is the return of four starters-Academic All-American Steve Bright (9 .7 p.p.g.), forward/center Al Williams (15.1 p.p.g.), and guards Harry Warren, (6.0 p.p.g.) and George Foering (4.4 p.p.g.). Bright and Williams were both key rebounders, averaging about seven per game while Warren led the team in assists with 173, and Foering also contributed 64 assists. Williams became the tenth all-time career scorer with 709 points. Two reserves from last year's squad fighting for a starting berth are 6-5 Jeff Slocum and 6-4 John Bucher. Slocum came off of the bench last year to give the Huskies added rebounding power, and also contributed vital points in some clutch situations. Bucher saw limited varsity action and as a JV averaged 16 p.p.g. He is being converted to a guard, and his overall strength makes him an outstanding leaper. Two others under consideration from last year's JV team are Miles Reitnouer (18 p.p.g.) and Jeff Roth (12 p.p.g.). In addition to his scoring ability, Reitnouer is a good jumper, and Roth at guard shoots well and plays tough defense. Several freshmen will be making the big jump from high school play to a varsity berth. They include 6-2 Jim Fertig, who was a leading scorer at Lansdale Catholic; 5-7 Brian Klinger, who is a good ball handler and was a member of the Cedar Crest High district championship team of two years ago; and 6-4 Bill Tillman, one of the better incoming freshman of recent years. Fertig, a brother of Rick who was a Husky standout in the 1960's, is a smart player and wiJI be utilized at guard. Tillman is capable of starting at guard or forward with his fine shooting and great leaping abilities. Another freshman who is receiving strong consideration is 6-5 Tim Beish, a former standout at Central Columbia. BSC faces another of its usually tough schedules, and the Huskies will be shooting for their seventh straight winning season under Chronister.
