BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE ###############################################4 Y3,atfGet&aee 1971-72 •###############################################, CO-CAPTAINS - Paul Kuhn and Howard Johnson #########H#######H###HHH##H#########H###I Information on the ''HUSKIES'' HEAD COACH CHARLES CHRONISTER, former assistant basketball coach at Gettysburg College, launches his career as a college head basketball coach, taking over the reins at BSC from Earl Voss, who has joined the Physical Education Department at West Chester State College as assistant basketball coach. A native of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Chronister attended Bermudian Sp_rings High School where he was a standout athlete. He matriculated at East Stroudsburg State College and played varsity basketball and baseball for the Warriors. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Health and Physical Education at ESSC. During the 1962-63 season at East Stroudsburg, he served as freshman basketball coach and guided the team to a 17-2 record. He went to Gettysburg after three successful years at Hanover (Pa.) High School. At Hanover, his jayvee and varsity teams were 59-9 while winning county championships and participating in the PIAA District III Class A playoffs. In addition to coaching the freshmen team at Gettysburg, one of his chief responsibilities was recruiting talent for head coach Bob Hulton. This aspect of his coaching career should enable him to oversee and participate in the obtaining of future talent for BSC. Chronister is married to the former Carol L. Strausbaugh of Hanover, Pa. They have two daughters, Lee Ann, age 4, and Garyn Lynn, age 2. The Chronisters reside at 1248 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, Penna. FRESHMAN COACH BURTON REESE took over the reins of the frosh cagers at midseason of 1968-69 when he joined the BSC Department of Physical Education in January. His charges won eight of the remaining eleven games and finished the season with a 12-5 record. Over the past two years he has posted records of 12-5 and 10-8 respectively. A native of Taylor, Penna., he received both his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State College. At ESSC he assisted in the basketball and tennis programs as a graduate assistant. After leaving_ ESSC, he joined the faculty of Old Forge (Pa.) High School where he was assistant basketball and football coach. He was next Athletic Director, tennis, and JV basketball coach at Abington Heights High School, Clarks Summit (Pa.) for 31/4 years. A former star athlete at Taylor High School and ESSC, Reese has remained active in amateur circles of both tennis and basketball. He has also served as tennis coach at BSC for the past two seasons. FACULTY ASSISTANT DR. MICHAEL HERBERT, a former tennis and cross country coach at BSC, has been active assisting in many phases of the basketball program for the past seven years on a voluntary basJS. A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, "Doc" received his degrees at the University of Maryland and Lehigh University and is a professor of Biology. re· 1 1 1 1 2 SEASON'S OUTLOOK New head coach Charles Chronister issued his initial call for varsity candidates on October 15 and a week later had selected the 11 varsity team members for this year's squad Chronister and his assistants, Burt Reese and Doc Herbert, have been working exceedingly hard in daily drills, introducing a new system for the Huskies. The new mentor pointed out that although BSC has been very successful in recent years in employing a zone defense, he favors a man-to-man style of defense. In addition, he is making some changes in the offense which will be "a new look" for Bloomsburg. Chronister feels he has ideal co-captains in two senior returning starters from last year's squad, 6'5" Howard Johnson, New Castle, Delaware, and 6'3" Paul Kuhn, Lebanon. Johnson averaged 15.9 points in 20 games and last year was the team's leading rebounder with an average of 13.8 rebounds per contest. Kuhn was the team's third leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points per game and also was extremely proficient in guarding and playmaking. Another regular performer from last year is junior Art Luptowski, Ridley Park, who again will perform his ball handling magic as the team's No. 1 playmaker. Two other members from last year's squad, who saw action as reserves and who should see considerable action this year, are 6'5" junior Dennis Mealy, Levittown, and 6'3" senior Bob Consorti, Chester. The big plus this year will be the tallest player that Bloomsburg has had in recent years, 6'8" sophomore John Willis, formerly of Manville, N. J. and now living in Carbondale. Willis did not participate on last year's freshman squad but has already performed well enough to have the inside track as the starting center. $~porting_ Luptowski in his playmaking role will be T~ny DaRe, a 5'10" sophomore from Allentown. The balance of the squad 18 made up of three other sophomores, 6'3" Gary Petcavage, Carbondale; 6'4" Dave Jones, Shavertown; and 6'0" Gary Choyka, Clarks Summit, plus 6'1" George Hamilton, a junior from Philadelphia who is a transfer student from Temple University. In analyzing the team's prospects at this early stage, Coach Chronister feels that the Huskies will be right in there fighting for the top spot in the tough Pennsylvania Conference. ''We nave the talent to do the job, providing we can put it all together," he stated His main concern in the early practice sessions is for the players to adapt to his style of play, and learning the different strengths and attributes of his players. Chronister and the Huskies are aiming towards some pre-season scrimmages with area colleges during the latter part of November. The regular schedule, including two holiday tournaments, will open on December 2.
