In spite of its youth and obvious lack of experience in varsity competition, last year's squad had a dual meet record of 11-1, took second place in the Pennsylvania State College Conference, and fifth place in the NAIA Tourney in Colorado. No varsity lettermen were lost through graduation last May, and there are only two seniors-Tom Gorant and Jerry \,Vright-on this year's roster. Due to practice teaching assignments, neither man will be available for the first two matches, against C. W. Post and Winona. About 40 men reported to Coach Russ Houk in mid-October; after six weeks of intensive. practice, the squad was cut to 30, and Houk described the outlook as "promising". The most outstanding group on the squad is composed of juniors, headed by Gene Dixon (157 lb. NAIA champ) and Bill Garson (191 lb. NAIA champ); Bill Hugh es, 123 pounder, is back after recovering from a dislocated elbow last year, and' Don Foust looks like a sure starter at 177 lbs. Dick Scorese (137 pound runner-up in the PSCAC) and Dave Stuempfle (157 lb. letterman) top a list of ten sophomore hopefuls. Coach Houk has been particularly pleased with the showing of two of his ten freshmen-Ed Taylor and Charles Houk-who will probably get the starting nod in the 130 and 147 pound divisions. In pre-season scrimmages, the team picked up valuable experience against Lehigh University and the U. S. Naval Academy. Both are tops in the East and are among the best in the nation. One thing is certain-the schedule of 10 dual meets will present plenty of challenge to the Huskies. Outstanding among their opponents are Lock Haven S.C., Winona S.C. (Minnesota), Waynesburg College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Appalachian State College (S. Carolina), and West Chester State College. The Huskies defeated Winona 15-13 in a dual meet last year, but the latter went on to cap third place in the N AIA post-season championship meet. WRESTLING SCHEDULE Dec. 9-C. W. HOUK VARSITY WRESTLING COACH Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City, and an outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined the college faculty in September, 1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football coach, and athletic director. A stellar performer on the Lincoln High School gridiron squad at Ellwood City, Houk also had an outstanding record in both football and wrestling at Lock Haven S.C. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Lock Haven in May, 1952, and the Master of Science degree at Bucknell University in 1957. While coaching at both South Williamsport and Muncy High Schools, he had a very successful tenure; several of his charges captured first and second places in State Championship meets. In 1957, his first year as head wrestling coach at BSC, Houk compiled a record of five wins and two losses. The next year, the Huskies won 9 dual meets and lost only 1-to Lock Haven S.C., In addition, they took the first place team championship in the annual Teachers College Championship Tourney. In March, 1960, the Bloomsburg team completed an undefeated season with 10 victories before going on to their second consecutive team championship in the Pennsylvania State College Tournament and first place in the N.A.I.A. Tournament (the first national championship in Bloomsburg's history.) During the 1958-59 and 1959-60 seasons, the Huskies amassed a string of 15 consecutive victories. In 1960, their record was 11-1. -:MICHAEL FLANAGAN ASSISTANT WRESTLING COACH Mike Flanagan, whose mat squads at Bellefonte H.S. piled up a 35-19 record under his astute guidance, joined the Bloomsburg faculty in January, 1960. He serves the Huskies as an assistant coach in football and wrestling, and is Varsity Track Coach. A graduate of Clearfield High School, Flanagan served three years as a paratrooper in World War II, received a B.S. degree from Lock Haven S.C., and an M. Ed. degree from Pennsylvania State University. He has a background of ten years experience as teacher, athletic coach, and recreation supervisor, having served as assistant football, assistant wrestling, and head track coach at DuBois H.S. and as assistant football coach at Curwensville High School before going- to Bellefonte.
