History of Berwick of Hertz & Raseley* By Permission •Previously published in "Picturesque Berwick," by Messrs. Hertz and Raseley and republished by Special permission. From this data and the statements of old residents tliey have endeavored to make a true account of the birth and growth of our town. of Berwick, letters Philadelphia by way of the Susquehanna river and located on a clearing at the mouth of Fishing Creek. The settlement was made up principally of Quakers, among them being Benjamin Doan, whose family name is quite familiar to our older citizens. In 1780 Owen removed thirteen or fourteen miles farther up the river (where Berwick is now situated). Here he and others among whom were the Doans, seemed to content themselves with farming and between times keeping a sharp outlook for Indians which at that time The earliest settlers were from Philadelphia. were playing havoc up the valley. During the first year or two they pulled tree tops together and covered them with bark, living in these temporary abodes until they were able to build more permanent homes of logs, etc. The farming land being of good quality, quite a number soon settled here and this no doubt prompted Evan Owen to found a town, which he did The location was a wise one; with natural drainage, because of its locain 1786. tion at an altitude of 100 feet above the river; and surrounded as it is with picturesque scenery, no more suitable site could have been found along the whole shore of The settlement, previously to the laying out of the the meandering Susquehanna. town, was called by the farmers Owensville, but on the formal plotting into streets, etc., Evan Owen christened it Berwick, after the town of his nativity in Scotland, along the Tweed. These settlers endured great hardships, as it was with the greatest difficulty they could obtain goods from Reading, and afterwards from Easton and Main h Chunk, on horseback and foot. Evan Owen was the "Squire," and settled all disputes. Every bear killed was brought to him and divided equally among the settlers. Doan's hardware store, and subsequently erected the hotel now known as Hotel Morton. The first public house was opened by John Brown in 1804 on the corner of Second and Market streets, and was the general stopping-place of the stage coaches running between Wilkes-Barre and Northumberland. In 180.1 a market house was erected in the centre of Market street, between Second and Third. It was supported on square timbers, sufficient space being underneath to hold market and drive horses and wagons. The building was devoted to school purposes, preaching, public assemblies and elections. It was 1,260 feet long, with piers of heavy planked timber and cost $52,435. At that time William Brien kept a hotel above the bridge, and Richard Smith, Sr., lived in a log house below the bridge, where he carried on shoemaking and distilling. The residents all came to the river to do their washing and left their kettles hanging along the ' ' ' ' ; shore the whole year round. On May Susquehanna and Baltimore 1826, the steamboat came up the Berwick Falls, where she exploded, wounding several persons and killing five, two of whom, John Turk and Cebar Whitmar, are buried in "the cemetery here. Some of the victims of the explosion were taken to the old brick building, corner Front and Mulberry streets, which was at that time a public tavern. The house now owned by Mrs. Anne Jackson was also opened to the injured and there given every attention by her people. Ground was broken for the North Branch Canal on the 4th of July, 1828. It was a great day for Berwick, visitors flocking from all the country round to celebrate this new era in its commercial importance. During the building of the canal it did, indeed, assume the appearance of a small city, and when the first packet boat passed through here, in 1830, Berwick was one of the most important points along its route. There were fourteen drinking places in the town and pure whiskey sold at three cents a dram. The Berwick Academy was erected in 1839 by Thomas Connelly on the site of Kev. John II. Eittenhouse and a Miss Jones, of Troy, N. Y., were the first teachers. The languages, sciences, higher mathematics, music, drawing and painting were taught, and it was considered a very fine educational institute. In later years it was used by the public schools, and was razed to the ground in 1873. The first telegraph line was constructed through Berwick in 1850, and with the opening of the Lackawanna & Bloomsburg Kailroad in 1858, the town threw off the lethargy which had almost overcome it and began a new and brighter existence. In 1861 Jackson & Woodin began the manufacture of car wheels and cars, and ten years later the planing mill was erected, being followed in 1872 by the rolling mill and the old market house. agricultural works. The first children born in Berwick were John and Anne Brown, children of Kobert Brown (Annie was the wife of Jesse Bowman, deceased, and the first person married in Berwick). By their liberality and public-spiritedness Berwick has become one of the most prosperous towns in Eastern Pennsylvania. In 1S40 Mordeeai W. Jackson in conjunction with Judge Mack erected on the corner of Third and Market streets a foundry, 25 by 46 feet, with a small shed in the rear, for the manufacture of agricultural implements. The firm of Jackson & Mack continued until 1843, when Mr. Jackson purchased Mack's interest and took into partnership Eobert McOurdy, adding to the manufacture of agricultural implements that of hollow ware. About fifteen men were employed, four horses furnishing the power for running the blower and lathe, the only machinery then in use. Col. Clarence G. Jackson,* deceased (who afterwards became Vice-President of the Jackson & Woodin Manufacturing Company, and one of our most enterprising and influential citizens) then a boy between six and seven years old, assisted in driving the horse that turned the lathe. In 1846 the firm of Jackson & McCurdy was dissolved and M. W. Jackson continued the business alone, adding to the foundry a blacksmith shop and in conjunction with Louis Enke manufacturing heavy wagons, etc. In March, 1849, W. H. Woodin became a partner and the firm of Jackson & Woodin inaugurated their since prosperous career by erecting a small machine shop, adding to the business that of finishing stoves, tinware and spouting, and superceding horse-power with a small steam engine. The working force was increased to twenty-five men and the pipes for the Berwick Water Works were cast, between 500 and 1,000 pounds of iron being melted per day. Bapid strides followed, and in 1855 they were making castings for the L. & B. B. R. (now the D., L. & W.) of which M. W. Jackson was then a director and the superintendent. Mill gearing and stationary engines were manufactured, and a contract being taken in 1858 to furnish the bridge castings for the P. & E. B. R,, an addition was built to the foundry, about a ton of iron melted per day and 50 men given employment. In the fall of 1861 an order was received for twenty four-wheel limestone cars. A shed about nine feet high, in which plows were formerly painted, was boarded up, and from this primitive car shop the first car was turned out. Two men were here employed and they built one car a week. The material was mortised, planed and framed by hand, holes being cut in the roof of the shop through which to let iron rods down into the cars. Small lots of 15 and 20 cars were built during the following summer at the rate of one and two cars a week, the wheels being pressed on the axles by hand with a wooden press. Some machinery in a shop at Taylorville being for sale in 1862, a cross-cut saw, a 15-foot one-sided bed planer, a tenoning machine and steam-power wheel press were purchased and stored in an old barn, not knowing how they were to be utilized. A contract to build one hundred cars was taken shortly after, and much anxiety was felt as to the their ability to complete it in time. Finally the cross-cut saw was brought from the barn, an inch and a-half line shaft put up, the saw attached, and the first machinery used in the construction of cars set in motion. It proved so successful that the planer and wheel press were put up, and five four-wheel cars were completed in one week. The tenoning machine followed and a car was built in one day, a feat which gave much satisfacf "m. Mr. Woodin remarking that "they didn't want to build more than one car a my. " But it was not long until additions were made to the machine shop, foundry, car and blacksmith shop, a planer double the size of the old one purchased, wooden tracks laid around the works and two four-wheeled cars were finished in a day. By this time Jackson & Woodin had acquired a reputation as car manufacturers heavier contracts were received and another car-shop was found A building 24 by 80 feet was erected alongside the railroad "unto be necessary. der the hill," a 40-horse power engine was made and two box-cars per day were completed, the repairing of old cars being carried on at "the works on the hill," as they were then called. In 1863 another addition was made to the car-shop and the capacity increased to six four-wheel coal ears and two box-cars per day. Thus step by step was this establishment enlarged until in the winter of 1865-66 they were building five and six eight-wheel coal cars a day for the Pennsylvania R. B. and employing about 150 hands. A fire broke out at 3 o'clock in the morning of March, 1866, and the works were A consultation was held at the bank the following day many totally destroyed. and with characteristic of the employes being present anxiously awaiting the result New machinery was purchased, enterprise it was decided to immediately rebuild. ; — 16 — The Bon Ton Bargain Store A. W. Jackson in the rear of the works, until in the year 1869 they were employing 550 men. On March 1, 1872, the Jackson & Woodin Mfg. Co. was organized with C. K. Woodin, President; C. G. Jackson, Vice-President; Garrick Mallery, Treasurer; M. W. Jackson and W. H. Woodin, Executive Committee. R. R. became a necessity. It was completed in the summer of 1872, running from the main line, with a grade of 150 feet to the mile, up a ninety-foot embankment to the rolling mill (then building), and thence to the works. Previous to the construction of this railroad the finished cars were drawn by horses through Market street to Canal, and down Canal street (with a grade of 400 feet) to the railroad; a heavy drag, with strong teeth and brake, being attached to the cars in the winter time to prevent them from sliding over the hill. In 1872 a rolling mill was added to the works of the company, enabling them to make and shape the various forms of iron necessary in the construction of cars at their own shops and also to fill orders for other car building concerns and the genFrom year to year other additions were made, one of the most noteeral market. worthy of these being the pipe foundry where all kinds of gas and water pipe are and with improved tions. made. Fairbanks -Morse Water Systems ^T The delivery of water under pressure without "water storage" is made possible in the most isolated country home at a comparatively small expense by the perfection of the auto-pneumatic pump. One or more pumps may be placed in a well or cistern or other source of supply and operated by compressed air, which is stored in an air tank by means of an air compressor. An automatic device makes the compressed air force the water out of two pump cylinders alternately, with a steady continuous flow. The pump operates only while water is drawn at the faucets. It starts automatically when the faucet is opened and stops when it is ^L, closed. Full descriptive pamphlet completely explaining operation of this system and of the elevated tank and pneumatic tank systems will be gladly furnished upon request We are sole agents in this vicinity for Fairbanks-Morse Fresh Water Systems, Gasoline Engines, Farm Machinery, Etc. Let us give you prices. CJ B. L. ESHLEMAN & SON PLUMBING 321 East Fifth Street HEATING Bell Phone 22 TINNING Berwick, Pa. BERWICK BITTENBENDER 315 W. Third Bruce, carpenter, bds 315 W.
