■EDINBORO STATE v ;' * TARTAN ’82 Edinboro, PA CONTENTS ESC Senior Scotsman Bob Cicerchi appears intent on his wish for fan support at this year's Homecoming Game. For him and many like him, 1982's Homecom ing would be the last they would participate in as students. The SENIOR section begins on page 220. A reversal in time? No — merely two ESC Students found masquerading about the Union on the Hallow een night dance. For more crazy pictures and crazy costumes leaf through the STUDENT LIFE section be ginning on page 68. 2 Not quite the New York Philharmonic yet impressive in its enthusiasm. Student participation in music seems to overflow at ESC. More on ESC musical groups and others appears in the GROUPS section beginning on page 158. How does this young virtuouso relate to ESC's 1981-82 year? A young Japanese girl amazes an ESC audience with her skill at performing Classical music. The Suzuki violin group performed at ESC in early October. For more, peek at the PERFORMANCE SECTION beginning on page 50. Prof. Ledrick of the Soc/Anthro/Social Work department no doubt generates interest with his popular, informal style. See more of ESC's professors by checking into the ACADEMICS section which begins on page 188. This unidentified Scotsman ap pears lost in a whirlwind of pain. But his physical pain accurately re flects the summation of the ESC football squad's '81 season. For more on a tough football season and other Scot team tarings, check out the SPORTS section beginning on page 8. Do Edinboro eyes turn when a Greek car passes? Usually not. But in this instance Theta Chi is representing a major Greek function — contribution to the Homecoming pa rade. For more on Theta Chi and other Greeks see the GREEK section beginning on page 124. 3 ESC's #1 Pain Registration Day Registration day brought forth its usual first day problems. McComb Fieldhouse was packed with people fighting long lines in an attempt to change courses. Many other students ran around the campus trying to find where the college had hidden their sched ules. One of the most frequently asked questions was, "Where the heck's Doucette Hall?" Most of the people in McComb were there be cause of schedule problems. Freshmen were placed in graduate courses. Others who had pre-paid and pre-registered, were not on the computer sheet. Confusion reigned. Many long lines leading to many tables. Of Course, the lines paths weren't clearly marked. The loudest complaints came from people who waited through long lines only to find out that they were in the wrong line. Year after year, one thing remains consistent on the registration day. The freshmen receive an early introduction to the standard ESC policy: Inefficien cy is the only way! 5 How to Piece Together a Preppie... Could the preppy craze that is sweeping the na tion finally be reaching Edinboro? Most everyone is caught up in the latest clothing rage that ranges from rubber "duck" moccasins and top-siders, to monogramming and the reknowned "IZOD." The preppy lifestyle, outlined in Lisa Bimbach's Preppy Handbook, is being widely adopted as ESC, and the true prep conforms to the printed word almost religiously. In case you want to know. .. The incredible suc cess if the IZOD shirt began when the French ten nis star Rene Lacoste broke with custom in 1926 by substituting a polo shirt for the typical garb, a white shirt and tie. He went on to personalize his shirt by adding a small crocodile to represent his nickname. Lacoste's shirt attracted so much attention that he went into business upon retiring from tennis, and the immense popularity of the sporting attire seems to have no end in sight. 6 "Wouldn't ya like to be a prepper too?" 7 SPORTS The Cross Country Team runs with the best of them ... Scots on National TV For one week, October 18-24, ESC joined the top football teams in the country as their game at Slippery Rock was filmed by the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN). The game was broadcast nationally by the network three times during the week. The coverage gave both of the schools some very important expo sure. The announcers for the game were John Sanders from KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh, and former Steeler quar terback Terry Hanratty. The game turned out to be a big dis appointment for ESC fans. The Scots played sloppy ball and lost 39-12 10 11 BASEBALL Baseball team shows improvement Although the baseball team finished the season with only five wins in twenty games, they showed a great improvement over last year's season when thev posted only one victory. Shortstop Greg Astorino was elected to the second team All Conference Team. The leading hitter was catcher Bill Moore at .356, Mike Starks led the pitchers in wins with two, and Greg Harayda had the best ERA, 3.27. Edinboro weather created its own problems causing several rainouts forcing several home games to be moved to other sites. Coach Ron Bunofsky pointed oul that the team was young, with only four seniors. Bunofsky cited a .299 team batting average and the lack of pitchers as the team's main weak nesses. He stated that at least six of the losses could easily have been turned around. 1981 BASEBALL TEAM (Front l-r) Mike Smrekar, Bob Snidemiller, Greg Astorino, Greg Harayda, Jim Sciullio, Jeff Nolan. They extended their winning streak to 50 consecutive dual meets and ran well in several tournaments, as well. The runners dominated the 'We Love Erie' run, finishing 1, 2, 4, and 5. They also won the Akron Zip run, and the Notre Dame Invitational. They ran a strong second in the prestigious Springbank International in London, Ontario. They performed equally well in post-season activity, winning the state Conference meet at Indiana, and finishing third in the NCAA Northeast regionals. For the last several years Coach Doug Watts has abandoned the team concept. Watts pointed out that, although the team lacks depth for dual matches, ESC still scores well in the big meets. He noted, "Our tradition of individual qual ity was maintained this year with outstanding performances by a number of men." The top performers were All-Americans Lance White and Rick Killian and steeplechaser Greg Beardsley, who qualified for the national meet. 16 Greg Beardsley in the Steeplechase during the State meet at Millersville. 17 CROSS COUNTRY 1981 WOMEN'S CROSSCOUNTRY, (l-r) Elaine Morford, Kelly Powers, Cathy Donaghue, Chris Dixon, Kathy Shockloss, Dottie Doyle and Beverly Stravino. Women's Cross Country becomes Varsity Sport The women's crosscountry team capped their inaugural varsity season by winning the Fredonia State Invita tional Tournament. The lady runners also won their first ever dual meet when they defeat ed Allegheny College 25-33. 18 The team was led by junior Elaine Morford who finished second overall in the Fredonia Tournament, and freshman Kathy Shockloss, who fin ished fourth. The Runners' Coach, Bill Mc Donald, was pleased with the perfor mance of his squad. "This was our first season and we had no recruits, so I was really pleased," he said. "They worked hard and we had some success, but we do need to recruit some more good runners." With only one senior on the squad there is a good nucleus to build from. And . . . they're off! Every year finds a new coach to lead the women. This year's coach was Fred Caro. He called the team "an enthusiastic bunch of girls," but added that the team needs more organization, and some good pitching. 21 FOOTBALL ESC's Swarming defense sting California ESC's Fighting Scot football team ended the season with a 4-6 overall record, but they recorded a poor 1-5 record in the PA. Conference-West Di vision. ESC's only non-league loss came at the hands of powerful Fairmont State in West Virginia. The Scots exploded for 51 points in their home opener against New Haven, but they had trouble scoring after that game. On average, the team had no trouble moving the ball down field, but crucial mistakes cost the team many scoring opportunities. Despite the scoring problem, the Scots' offense was ranked among the nation's leaders in rushing with an average near 240 yards per game. The defense was also ranked among the leaders in rushing defense. Seniors Bob Cicerchi and Ron Link led the crushing defense. Coach Creehan was not disappoint ed by the season. He explained that the club was young and he expected mis takes, but pointed to their improve ment through the season. Creehan noted the team won their last three games. Another late-season highlight was the emergence of Freshman quarter back Blair Hrovath. Hopefully, he will put an end to the musical QB's. 25 TENNIS Lady Netters win Two State Titles Junior Kim Wright went through the entire season undefeated to capture the PA singles title. The number two doubles team of senior Leslie Bier and freshman Nancy McManus went 12-0 to earn the second dou bles title in the Pennsylvania Conference Champion ships. Overall, the team tied for third of the thirteen teams. The team's overall depth was the key to their season 8-2 record, as well as their showing in the state match. Coach George Vierkorn pointed out that nine differ ent girls earned points in the championships. And, most of the team will be back next year. Michaelle Calarco and Leslie Bier are the only sen iors. Leslie was very important to the team as a leader and co-captain, as well as earning a 9-1 record. She also earned a letter in all four of her seasons. Coach Vier korn added, "In future years, my teams could be 20-0, but it would not be as complete, satisfying, and re warding as this season has been. During the spring, they set a school record for victories in 1 year, when they posted a 16-3 re cord. They also finished second in the Pennsyl vania Conference and the NAIA District 18. First year head coach Jim Flynn started his team with an 8 match southern road trip which included a match with Division 1 School Auburn University. The net men returned home with a 7-1 record on their way to a great season. The team was led by seniors Jim Abraham, Alan Staub, Lou Murphy and Drew Huskey. Tony Womeodu and freshman Mike Madia completed the starting line-up. Coach Flynn re ported that the team's overall depth won the ECAC for them, as everyone contributed. Coach Flynn admitted that next season would have to be regarded as a rebuilding year, but looks for Dan Ferretti, Mike Bianchi and Tom Shaffer to fill in and keep the winning tradition. 28 ESC 8 3 8 9 7 7 9 6 8 4 6 9 9 8 5 0 6 9 7 4 9 8 Berry Shorter W. We knew we would be young and make mistakes. However, this was our best crop of recruits in a number of years and we gave them all experi ence." Shimpeno's spikers are young and made mistakes, winning only 2 of 11 games. However, the team was in most of the games, giving up 3 or fewer goals in six of them. The squad's real problem was offense as they were shut out 6 times and only scored 10 goals for the season. Coach Shimpeno highlighted the play of Freshman Joe Drozynski, Tom Purcell, and Michael Jack. He also admired the play of senior co captain Paul Andriscin and Chuck Massaro and added that junior J.C. This year the spikers picked up where they left off last season. They successfully defended their state title and moved to the regional tournament. The team was led by four-year letter winners Pat Stucke, Marsha Miller, and Melody Groves. Coach Pat McLane entered his 10th season with a 187-66 record, and improved his regular season mark to 210-75. McLane's biggest fear for this year was overconfidence, but the team lived up to his expectations. At press time the Lady Scots were packing their bags for the regionals in Maryland. 32 k Lori Lewis goes up for a spike in the National Championships. The lady netters travelled to Towson State in Maryland, where they arrived with their faces painted and stormed to the East ern Regional Championship, de feating Southern Connecticut and Cortland in the semifinal and final rounds. Edinboro was the only school out of the 16 which made the Na tionals that did not award schol arships. Coach McLane was pleased even though they didn't win because they played well with the best teams in the coun try. Looking to next season the ma jor challenge will be replacing Melody Groves, Marsha Miller, Pat Stucke, Cindy Popatak and Lori Lee, although an excellent nucleus returns. The Scots opened the season with a second place trophy at the Fairmont State Thanksgiving Tournament, losing to host Fairmont in the championship game. Edinboro had a good performance at the Allegheny Tournament as they defeated Allegheny in the finals. Leading the charge for the Scots were juniors Steve Senko and Land Battle. Senko averaged 12 points a game and ripped down RR bounds at an amazing 11.3 per game. Battle also shot over 55 percent from the floor. Also contributing to the Scots' success was Edwin Wright and newcomers Brian Simmons and Clyde Brabson. The season was highlighted by two victories over Clarion and a crushing win at Gannon. Next year, the Scots will travel to Ak ron University. Conti is looking forward to next season since the entire team is returning. 34 i Row 1: Mike Calahan, Keith Woods, Julius Holman, Brian Simmons, Steve Senko, Brian Sharrick, Edwin Wright and Willie Lee. Coach Lipkovich pointed out that the small team also hurt practices be cause there are not enough players for a full scrimmage. Edinboro was outclassed at East Stroudsburg as the Scots were one of four Division II schools. The other nine compete at the Division I level. Junior Ron Hamrick finished in the 150 pound weight class. Senior Greg Sirb closed out his ca reer at ESC in high fashion. The twotime All-American from Sharon, PA won the 118-pound titles at the Mid west Classic in Anderson, Indiana and at the Edinboro Invitational. Sirb also finished 6th at the state champion ships. WFSE is unlike any other station in the area ... and there is no doubt that we're going to be competitive at 3000 watts." With these words WFSE-FM leaves the realm of toy, and hobby and, "do your own thing" academic radio and enters the world of competitive broadcasting. With the move to 3000 watts WFSE will beef-up its management and staff with a view toward creating a professional and creative student-run radio facility. WFSE will continue to stress entertainment, but the station's magazine format will permit the station to offer a consistent pattern of classical, country, jazz, and rock music as well as a sturdy supply of public affairs and sports broadcasts. Dr. Gary Christiansen and the management of WFSE deserve applause for the radio successes they have brought to ESC in the past. We wish them luck in their new venture. hmQ'M.kt* a,.,.,, ■ (T(>« XIUM.
