Our college coaches have demonstrated their love for athletics by giving freely of their time to train outstanding BSC athletes and to develop character. Mr. Russell Houk. Chairman of the .Athletic Committee, needs little introduction since his wrestling teams have consistently won state and national honors. His teams have established records in all weight classes and in both individual and team competition. Mr. Houk has been equally fortunate in his selection of athletic assistants. Leading the list is Mr. \^alter Blair. Chairman of the Department of Physical Education, who acts as head football coach. Mr. Blair's assistants are Mr. Eli McLaughlin, line coach; Mr. Richard Mentzer. backfield coach: and Mr. George \^ ilwohl. end coach. All of the assistant coaches are members of the Physical Educatioti Department. Dr. Satz. of the Special Education Department, organized this particular sport on the BSC campus and his teams maintained enviable records in league competition. In addition to coaching basketball. Mr. Norton will handle the tennis assignment this year, replacing Mr. Himes, who has coached this sport for the last two years. Bloomsburg State has been fortunate in having enthusiastic support for its athletic program not only from the students and faculty, but from area residents as well. Even though athletic scholarships have not been available, Bloomsburg State College has had better than average teams to compete in the tough Pennsylvania State College Conference competition. From time to time, there have been outstanding football, baseball, and track teams. The first half saw Lock Haven take the lead and it wasn't until the fourth period that Kurzinsky pushed the ])igskin over the goal for six points. Thomas then took a long pass in for six more and with the extra points the score was 14 to 7. But the Huskies were not able to hold this lead and the Bald Eagles went on to win Tlie Huskies, forced to their season opener, 21 to 14. Bloomsburg 21 Mansfield 30 The Bloomsburg Huskies met their second defeat, this time at the hands of the Mansfield Mountaineers. Early in the game, Kurzinsky spotted Dick Davala in the end zone roll up the first score of the game. The Mountaineers dominated play for the rest of the half and made good three scoring attempts. The TD's came fast after the half time break, with \\ ayne Thomas taking a 30-yard pass in for six points, and later Roy Resavage made it 21 to 20. The Huskies were not able to hold this lead, however, and Mansfield went on to victory. to Bloomsburg 13 Kings 6 A punt return of 29 yards by Fred Stoicheff and a pass interception by Larry Tironi set up two scoring drives that put the Huskies in the "win" column for the first time this season. The initial score of the game came through the airways from Bob Kurzinsky to Dick Davala. senior end. Following a hard Husky drive early in the third period, Kurzinsky pushed the ball into the end zone, making the score 13 to 0. In the last quarter. Bloomsburg West Chester 28 The Huskies, playing their best game of the season large Homecoming crowd, offered some stiff resistance for the Golden Rams of West Chester. The Rams took advantage of three fumbles to raise the score in the first half to 19 to 0. The one Husky threat of the game came about midway in the third period as Kurzinsky fired a pass to I^oy Peffer. Bloomsburg Milh The Husky defense received its test as ille 6 Millersville pushed its way deep into Bloomsburg territory several times during the afternoon. After a hard fought, scoreless first half, the Marauders found a loose hall late in the third period. Taking advantage of this fumble. Millersville got in the scoring column with six points. The Huskies thundered back in the final period with several threats but they were unable to score. The game ended with a score of 6 to 0. "^ Bloomsburg 7 Cheyney came on at Athletic Park as the Bloomsburg meet a surprisingly improved Cheyney team. As the game got on its way. the Huskies put on several long, sustained drives, only to be halted each time within five or ten yards of the end zone. The defensive play of Bloomsburg was outstanding as Cheyney was stopped with very little yardage.
