Fenstemaker, Class of 1912. He was a faculty member from 1926 to 1963, editor of The Alumni Quarterly from 1926 to 1971, and president of the Alumni Association from 1962 to 1971. The Alumni Association bestowed its Distinguished Service Award on him in 1964, and the University awarded him its first honorary doctorate in 1983. He died in 1990 at age 96. State System universities enroll over 98,000 students, 88 percent of v^hom are Pennsylvania residents. With more than 11,000 employees, the State System is the 18th largest employer in the state. The introductory pages of this directory provide you with a collection of interesting facts about the University. The various sections of the directory will enable you to reestablish contact with friends and classmates. If you are new to your location, it will help you to determine how many alumni are located near you. One of the objectives of the Alumni Association is to keep lines of communication open between all alumni and the University. We attempt to do this by conducting chapter meetings throughout the state and in other states. The gatherings take various forms: an informal evening in someone's home, a picnic, an after-work mixer, an alumni luncheon lecture, or a dinner. In nearly every case, at least one representative of the University and/or the Alumni Assocation attends the event to talk with alumni and share information. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained and career education. expanded to include all of Pennsylvaiua; its mission is to provide programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, teacher education, and health sciences. The College of Graduate Studies offers the Master of Arts degree in three major areas, the Master of Science in eight, and the Master of Education in five. The Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science in Nursing degrees are also offered, and there are 1 1 supervisory certification programs for teachers. In addition, Bloomsburg offers course work for a doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Bloomsburg University's College of Extended Programs serves a large student population through nondegree credit coourses, noncredit minicourses, off-cam pus classes, credit for life experience, and courses taught by public service television. The University is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. Its programs in education are approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing. The social work program is accredited by the Council for Social Work Education. The University receives recognition from the American Chemical Society for its chemistry programs, and several other departments have special recognition from professional organizations. The 192-acre campus is divided into a lower and an upper campus. The Bachelor of Education degree is offered in biology, business education, chemistry, communication disorders, communications, dental hygiene, early childhood eiducation, earth and space science, elementary education, English, French, general science, mathematics, physics, social studies, Spanish, and special education. The University cdso offers an Associate in Science degree in health sciences. Preprofessional advisement and prerequisite course work are available for students interested in entering professional schools of dentistry, law, medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy and veterinary medicine. Five-year (3-2) programs combining liberal arts and engineering study are offered in conjunction with Pennsylvania State University and Wilkes College. Students receive appropriate baccalaureate degrees from each university. A five-year Bachelor of Arts/Master of Business Administration program is available for chemistry, French and Spanish majors who wish to enhance their career preparation with training in business. The University also has an affiliation agreement with Thomas Jefferson University for allied health programs in cytotechnology, dental hygiene, occupational therapy, and radiologic technology. A Scholars Program for talented freshmen and sophomores and a junior/senior honors program for superior students in the College of Arts and Sciences are available. The University has 369 full-time and 29 part-time faculty members. To keep pace with the changing demographics of the Association's membership, systematic surveys of alumni during their reunion years will be conducted. All alumni will therefore be surveyed within a five-year period. The Association of The Alumni Board The board of Directors consists of 24 directors elected to serve two-year terms. Directors are nominated on the basis of several Class year, gender, geographical location, and interest or participation in activities of the Association or University. The board conducts the Association's business using an active committee structure. The Committees Awards and Recognition — This committee seeks, reviews and recommends nominations for "Distinguished 'Toung Alumni of the Year," and "Honorary Alumni" designation. and reviews proposals for new awards and recognition programs. It also offers its recommendations on other financial matters. One of this committee's most recent projects is the sponsorship of the Bloomsburg University special license plate program. Chapters and Student Relations — This committee assists in the development of policies and principles for the alumni chapter program. Current plans call for the development of chaprter coordinating committees in several geographical areas, including Wyoming Valley, Harrisburg, Lehigh Valley, and Montgomery County. Others will be added in the future. Based on the results of interest surveys, the coordinating committees plan events and projects to promote the University and the Alumni Association. This board committee also provides liaison with the Husky Ambassadors and plans the annual Senior Send-Off Picnic. It sponsors "Share-A-Day," a career program with matches students with BU alumni with whom they can spend time on the job. Alumni in New Jersey represent the University at 30 to 40 college night programs each year. — This committee works with the Vice President for University Advancement and the Legislative Affairs Pennsylvania Coimcil of Alumni Associations (PC A A) to implement strategies to gain support for the State System of Higher Education from the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the Governor. — A variety of loans and scholarships, provided by alumni and friends of the Alumni Association. The committee plans an annual scholarship presentation program and reception. This committee also sets policy for the McNinch Student Loan Fund, created by a bequest from Mary McNinch and administered by the director of alumni affairs. The Howard Fenstemaker Library Book Fund is administered by a sub-committee which uses interest earned by the fund to purchase books for the Harvey A. Andruss Library. Loans and Scholarships University, are available to undergraduates through the — Property This committee makes recommendations concerning operation and maintenance of the Fenstemaker Alumni House, located on Lightstreet Road at the northeast comer of the lower campus. The committee also advises the Association on matters concerning the maintenance of the Alumni Room in Carver Hall. It also recommends actions on acquisitions and disposal of furniture, equipment and property belonging to the Association. Alumni have traditionally supported campus beautification projects, including the Sesquicentennial Tree Project in 1989. This committee was instrumental in the purchase of the Fenstemaker Alumni House in 1985. A sub-committee guided the creation of the Veterans' Memorial Garden on the front lawn of the Fenstemaker Alumni House (dedicated on Homecoming 1989) and a Veterans' Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. — This committee assists in planning Alumni Weekend and Homecoming activities. CHher and Shaw Festival theatre trips are also planned by this committee. Programs like the Alumni Luncheon Lecture Series provide educational settings in which to meet some of the University's outstanding faculty members.
