Jeff Schaffer ofthe Newman Community, a Catholic organization on campus, said the tragedy reminded us that we are "one human family." He then handed out blue wristbands with the phrase printed on them. Tips To Save Big Bucks Dan Blackmore Guest Writer Spending money wisely while in college is often a challenging objective. With so much freedom and often an ATM card in hand, temptation is constantly knocking on the bank account door. What most students do not realize is that it is quite simple to make that money last. Though you will not be able to eat out or order pizza every night, you will still be able to enjoy everything that college has to offerand keep a few extra dollars in your pocket. The first thing an LHU student has to get used to is eating at Bentley. It is already paid for, so take advantage of it. Instead of going to the convenience store for every bottle of soda you want, use the pre-paid flex account. There is already money in there so you will not be paying out ofthe pocket. "The flex account really helps you out a lot. I really like Ouizno's subs and now I can simply charge it to my card without paying out ofmy pocket. It is really nice that 1 can feel like I am going to eat without using extra money." said Sarah Carney from Jackson, New Jersey. Jessica Thompson Features Editor If going out to cat is a must, then make wise meal decisions. Consider going out for breakfast instead of dinner. If dinner is all you have time for. try ordering an appetizer instead of a full meal and you will most likely cut the price in half. Another good way to eat great and save money is to make your own. Making your own food is the cheapest way to eat. Almost everything you buy these days is microwavable. so use that to your advantage. Phone bills can also be a big money pitfall. Keeping in contact with your friends is a definite need in college, but go about it in a smarter fashion. Use the phone in thc dorm as much as possible, pick up the cell phone only when absolutely needed. Shop around for a cheaper wireless plan or think about starting a family plan with your friends because then you can talk to each other for free. "I talk to my friends a lot and I used to go way over my minutes. After a few ridiculous phone bills I decided to make a family plan with my friends. The initial cost isn't that bad and every extra person is only ten dollars a month. Now we talk for free and my bills are definitely at an all time low, which is a really good thing." said Josh Wisniewski, a sophomore at LHU. The ATM card can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Having the card on you at all times brings new temptation to spend your hard earned money. The most effective way to make your money last is to leave the ATM card in your room and limit yourself with cash. At the beginning of the week, take out a reasonable amount of money and make that last the week. This way you will not be overdrawn on your card when the year is over. The average college graduate leaves college with $3,000 of debt, so think about that the next time you plan on charging. Also, bring a bicycle to campus. Lock Haven's campus is not the biggest in the world so you can pretty much go anywhere with a bicycle. With gas prices constantly going up. driving around the city will help you save a pretty penny. Riding a bike is free and it is also good exercise as well. Be smart when using your money because it will leave your pocket as fast as you can pull your hand out. Keep track ofall spendings to have an idea of where you are in your bank account. Give yourself a budget and be smart when spending money. With the addition of a new outdoor patio at Hanger 9 this summer and Java Therapy, the coffee shop, opening last spring, downtown Lock Haven has been getting quite the facelift over the past few months. This facelift has recently taken on a new direction, however, and has spread to the feet of the community of Lock Haven. Haven Shoes, 115 E. Fleming, an expert outdoorsman. found that opening a shoe store was the natural thing to do after working in a friend's shoe store in State College for six years. "It was never my goal growing up to open a shoe store. 1 didn't even go to college for it. After working at my friend's store, it was just something that I grew into," explained Fleming. Fleming also hopes to provide not only the community with quality shoes, but the uni- vcrsity students as well. "When I was working in State College, I would get so many college students from Lock Haven that would drive all the way up here just to buy a pair of shoes. That sounded crazy to me so I figured it would be a good opportunity," said Fleming. Haven Shoes is fully stocked with all different types of shoes such as athletic wear, casual shoes and dress shoes. They also carry name brands like Dr. Martens. New Balance and Timberland. Meetings are held every other Wednesday in Sloan 321, Countdown Theatre. "Even when we simply seek to entertain, we learn something about ourselves," said Chelakis. Theatre is a living being that creates community as it performs itself, and the healthier our communities are, thc better people we become." Some think that theatre is just about jazz hands and chorus lines, but in the end, it is much more than that. Theatre is an expression. It encompasses every emotion evoked in the human spirit and through performance it tries to capture those emotions of stage. Everything surrounding human behavior can be observed in theatre. Depicted during the Trojan War, the play portrays how the women of Troy cope with a city lost and lives destroyed because of the destruction and violence that inevitably accompany the war. The messages parallel our current state of war and the repercussions that our society is dealing with. Rounding out the fall lineup is Extremities, directed by junior Erin McDonald, which can be seen in the Countdown Theatre Nov. 14, 15, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Diving into the world of violence and savage revenge, Extremities explores what happens when the prey becomes the hunter and a victim has the chance to gain the upper hand against her would-be rapist. Friday, September 16, 2005 Retractions you probably didn't see I'm not at all surprised by any of the following corrections, so I thought I'd pass them on: Last Sunday, the TimesPicayune reported the Mayor Nagin had purchased a home in Dallas, suggesting that he didn't see any future in New Orleans. Today the paper issued a retraction: he didn't buy a house, he rented a condo for his wife and children, then returned to work in New Orleans. Previously, many news sources reported that the Mayor hadn't even stayed in the city during the hurricane and its aftermath, making reference to the fact that his office had been "relocated outside of the city." Later, these reports were corrected-his physical office had been set up in a safe place, but the mayor remained in the city. Thc Washington Post on September 4th. reported that Governor Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency. Later they retracted this statement (attributed to an unnamed "A Sept. 4 article on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina incorrectly said that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) had not declared a state of emergency. She declared an emergency on Aug. 26." That's the Friday BEFORE the storm. She requested federal assistance on the 27th--two days BEFORE the storm. Incidently, the same Post article details the reasons why the Bush administration tried to force the state into signing over all authority to them: '"Quite frankly, if they'd been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals,' said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly." And finallly, from my friends at the Lousiana SPCA, an answer to questions based on a CNN report that they were bypassing animals in order to rescue only pets on their "list" of animals whose rescue had been requested by owners: "Animals on the rescue list at times do have priority, although, these are far from the only ones being rescued and housed at the temporary shelter. The people who have called in making a specific request to rescue their pet will be prepared to come and get their animal. This will free up much needed space and resources to save more. Due to thc circumstances, many of the pets locked in homes have a very limited supply of food and water. They also have owners willing to remove them as soon as possible. All thc animals need to be saved. We are doing what is necessary to save as many as possible." Monday, September 19, 2005 Piety Street Chemical Spill A large chunk of my neighborhood has suddenly been blocked off with signs warning of a chemical spill. I recently saw a picture of my street. It looks unchanged, except for the barbed wire blockade, and the fact that I can't return there. One of the strangest things about this whole experience is not knowing. It's been three weeks since I left. What do I know now? Not much. From what I can tell, the flood waters stopped at my street. Two blocks on the other side of me, along the river, the warehouses burned down. So my immediate neighborhood may be okay, including my own : Write a letter to the editor.*: : • : When writing, please include your full name, and phone number where you can be reached. My landlord finally called me, to report that he is okay and tell crazy stories about trying to hold the neighborhood together—escorting women so they wouldn't be raped, etcuntil the National Guard forced him out. Another friend told me that he had friends in the Marigny who managed to get back to check on their things and found that cverything-cverything—was gone. The house hadn't flooded at all, but someone had helped themselves to thc furniture, appliances, clothes, and art. And yet, every day brings a new, contradictory report, like this one describing a four block area that my house borders: "A friend ofmine went to the Bywater yesterday, he is a doctor and managed to get past thc road block. He told me when he got to Clouet Street, there was barbwire across the streets of Chartres, Royal. Dauphine and Burgundy, and the area was closed two blocks down to Piety. On the barbed wire was a sign that read, "Closed to Public. Chemical Spill Keep Out!" i Of course he went in anyway and checked on our house. He didn't see any sign ofa spill anywhere, I'm thinking this could be from the fire at the wharf. After a couple of days of feeling much better, I'm starting In your September 14 publication. Tuesday, September 20, 2005 A note to the Neville Brothers Dear Aaron and Cyril, I saw you on the news today declaring that you will never return to New Orleans, "except to play music." I am curious. How will your abandoning the city make up for the fact that the city was abandoned by those who might have helped? Will those who return be better off without you? Do you think that withdrawing your support will bring more attention to the problems the city may face? And what should be made of the exception to the rule: you're willingness to return for an evening, in exchange for money. I'm hoping there's been a misunderstanding. Perhaps, like many of us, you are simply in shock. Maybe you can't imagine returning. Maybe, when you say "to play music" you mean that the music will remain and draw you back, not that you, too, will forget the City that Care Forgot. God will always forgive us when we sin against him, but we must repent our sins in order for him to forgive us. Psalm 130 is a wonderful and short psalm that talks about God's forgiveness. "If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you. so that you may be revered...O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities," Psalm 130; 3-4; 7-8. t. j God will forgive our sins no matter what we do if we ask him to, therefore, we must act thc same way in Christ-like love and forgive thc sins ofothers that do us wrong. The Lord our God loves us so much that he sent his only Son to die for us so that we would have eternal life in Heaven and that our sins would be forgiven. We should always respond to others in the same love that God has for us, which includes forgiving others when they do us wrong. A Pastor that I once knew told me that she believed the definition of a human being was "a screw up." and she is right. We all mess up sometimes. We all sin, and that is why we should always repent the things that we have done wrong not just to the people that wc have done wrong to, but to God as well. While our friends and family might not always forgive us for certain things, God always will no matter what, all we have to do is ask.
