Job Market For Teachers Still Looks Gloomy The predicted shortage of teachers in the 1980s is little consolation to the 417 students who graduated in 1972 from Lock Haven State with degrees in education. They are faced with the teacher surplus of the 1970s. While 225 graduates, 54% found teaching jobs, there remained 110 s t i l l seeking teaching positions as of November, according to the annual let^ort released by C . Herbert I^irson, Jr., director of placement in Bentley Hall. U.S. Department of Labor s t a t i s t i c i a n s predict that the tightening teacher market will continue ttu-oughout the 1970s. Projections show that enrollment elementary schools will decline nationally by some two million and secondary school enrollment will hold s t e a d y . U.S. Office of Education sti>dies of the 1970 census indicate a need for teachers will be felt in the 1980s predicted on the bas i s that the largest single age group in the 1970 c e n s u s were ten-year-olds. As these children reach child-bearing a g e , the grandchildren of the post-war boom babies will begin to arrive and enter school during the 1980s. Notifications of teaching positions available, received by LHS's Placement Office, have remained constant over the past five years. Many of the positions for 1972 were from out-of-state and fewer 1972 graduates acceptec these positions than in the past, 14% as compared to 22% in 1971 and 24% in 1970. The largest number of outof-state positions were accepted in Maryland, followed by New York. Within Pennsylvania, Lycoming County continued to hire the largest number of 1972 teaching graduates followed by Clinton County. Further indication of increasing job competition among teache r s is seen in the number of forner graduates in education who reactivated their files with the Placement Office, indicating they were seeking j o b s . The number increased from 60 in 1970 to 88 in )971, with ItV. in 1972. E agle ye ifi. XV. EAGLE WING 'Soooky' Hoax Dispersed by Farley F a r e , u . A . The ace detective of the Campus Security Prilire. Lester Latreck, has announced that he h«s solved the mystery of Spooky's murder. After mucn didactic research, diligent examination of the scene of the crime, and careful deduction, Mr. Latreck has decided that the whole PMD house is " s p o o ky". The casket was examined by Mr. Latreck and found to be empty, a fact which he attributed to the circumstaiKe that it would be impossible to cram the 30 or so odd PMD brothers into one casket. After careful examination and squeezing, the County Coroner, Dr. Milton, M. D. has de • duced that the alleged "numerous a b r a s i o n s " were, in fact, numerous acne blemishes, or in the common vernacular, " z i t s " . The Office of the D.
