LOCK HAVEN - The largest and
most accurate relief globe is
now on permanent display on
the ground floor of Stevenson
Library, Lock Haven Slate College.
The original was constructed
by Rand McNally over a two
year period at a cost of $450,000.
The LHS model is a replica of
the globe used by N.A.S.A. in
their astronaut training program.
It is painted to represent summer vegetation in both hemispheres, wilh varied shades of
bliE indicating ocean d e p t h s . A
similar model is located at the
United States Military Academy
at West Point N.Y.
The globe, which t r e a s ures over six feet in diameter,
ivas shipped in two hemispheres
which fit precisely at the Equator, and was assembled on the
ground floor of Stevenson Library, near the children's library
section. The axis is inclined 23!^
degrees from vertical to correspond with the inclination of the
earth's a x i s . The globe makes
one entire revolution every three
minutes. A mirrored base allows
the viewer lo s e e the t)Ottom portion e a s i l y .
