BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE
Bloomsburg State College, one of the 14 Commonwealth-owned colleges and university, began as an Academy in 1839 "to teach youth the elements of a classical education."
In 1856 it was chartered as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, and in 1869 it became a
State Normal School.

The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916, and in 1920
teacher education became the sole institutional purpose. The name was changed to Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1927, and authority was granted to offer the degree, Bachelor
of Science in Education. In 1960 the institution became Bloomsburg State College, with
authorization to grant the degree, Bachelor of Arts, for liberal arts programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. That same year graduate study was authorized.
The college currently offers 60 baccalaureate degree programs in the Arts and Sciences,
Business, and Professional Studies. Teacher certification is available in 20 undergraduate
program areas. At the graduate level the college has 31 masters degree programs and five
teacher education certification programs. Through the School of Extended Programs, the
college extends educational opportunities to people of all ages who wish to pursue knowledge
for professional advancement or for their own enrichment.
Today, 653 young people are receiving baccalaureate degrees; 53 are receiving masters
degrees.

Frank F. Mankiewicz

Frank Mankiewicz is a man of varied and numerous talents. From his first stint in radio
with the Armed Forces Network in post-war Germany, to his present position as president
and vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of National Public Radio, Mankiewicz has run
the gamut of unusual careers-from free lance writing for newspapers, magazines, and
syndicates, to press secretary for Senators Robert Kennedy and George McGovern. He has
served as a civil rights director for the Anti-Defamation League, argued cases for the United
Steelworkers, and, as the Peace Corps' Regional Director for Latin America, was responsible
for 3,500 volunteers in 21 countries.
From 1968 to 1971, he and columnist Tom Braden teamed to write a Washington
based syndicated column, and also to co-anchor a nightly newscast on the CBS television
affiliate WTOP. Stints as commentator for the British Broadcasting Company, the Canadian
Broadcasting Company, and the European Broadcasting company are also on his list of
credentials. An independent writer, Mankiewicz is the author of four books, Perfectly
Clear: Nixon from Whittier to Watergate; US vs. Richard Nixon: The Final Crisis; With
Fidel: Portrait of Castro and Cuba; and Remote Control; Television and the Manipulation
of American Life.
