JR.

The Honorable Joseph R. Eiden, Jr., is seiving his fifth year as United
States Senator from Delaware. He was 33 years of age when elected in 1972,
one of the youngest men ever elected to the Senate.
A native of Scranton, Pa., he received his baccalaureate degree from the
University of Delaware and his law degree from Syracuse University. He was
a trial lawyer in Wilmington before his election to the Senate.
He is chairman of the Senate Sub-committee on European Affairs; a
member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, serving as chairman of a sub-committee ad hoc working group on secrecy; chairman of the
sub-committee on penitentiary and corrections of the Senate Judiciary Committee; and a member of the Steering Committee on Budget.
In 1974 he was chosen one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Men in
America" by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was named by
Time Magazine as one of 200 young Americans whose leadership is expected to have an impact on the nation. He also received Syracuse University's "Chancellor's Medal" for excellence in achievement.

BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE

Bloomsburg State College began as an Academy in 1839 "to teach youth the
elements of a classical education." In 1856 it was chartered as the Bloomsburg
Literary Institute, and in 1869 it became a State Normal School.
The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916, and in
1920 teacher education became the sole institutional purpose. The name was changed
to Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1927, and authority was granted to offer
the degree, Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1960 the institution became Bloomsburg State College, with authorization to grant the degree, Bachelor of Arts, for
liberal arts programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. That
same year graduate study was authorized.
The college currently offers 57 baccalaureate degree programs in the Arts and
Sciences, Business, and Professional Studies. Teacher certification is available in 18
undergraduate program areas. At the graduate level the college has 26 masters degree programs and three teacher education certification programs. Through the
School of Extended Programs, the college extends educational opportunities to people of all ages who wish to pursue knowledge for professional advancement or for
their own enrichment.
Today, 653 young people are receiving baccalaureate degrees; 35 are receiving
masters degrees.
