A charter providing for the Bloomsburg Literary Institute was drawn up in 1856. Recognized as a State Normal School on February 19, 1869, Bloomsburg remained a private institution. until May, 1916 when it was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The transition from Normal School to State Teachers College was begun in 1927 when authority to confer the Bachelor of Science degree in Education was granted. By an Act of the General Assembly in January, 1960, the fourteen State Teachers Colleges of Pennsylvania became State Colleges. Authorization to offer courses leading to the Master of Education degree was given by the State Council of Education in the same year. In the Spring of 1962, the college was granted approval by the State Council of Education to offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in the Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities, beginning September, 1962. The first students enrolled in this program began their studies in September, 1963. The Academic Costume The academic' costumes worn by members of the faculty have a special significance. The inside collar of the hood indicates the colors of the college or university which awarded the degree. The color of the outside rim of the hood symbolizes one of the following departments of learning: Arts, Letters, Humanities - White Business - Drab Economics - Copper Education - Light Blue Fine Arts - Brown Library Science - Lemon Music - Pink Philosophy - Blue Physical Education - Sage Green Science - Gold Yellow Social Science - Citron Theology or Divinity - Scarlet ALMA MATER Far above the river winding Ever seaward Susquehanna Midst the mountains grand, Never resting flows; Stands our College, dear to students Ever upward, striving, climbing Far throughout the land. Onward Bloomsburg goes. Chorus Far and wide though we may wander, Still our hearts are true; Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg College To our hilltop Alma Mater Up on College Hill; We our pledge renew. Years to come shall find us ever True to Bloomsburg still. Words-Joseph H. Dennis Air-"Annie Lyle"
