Dennis Air-"Annie Lyle" History of Bloomsburg State College Academy, Literary Institute, State Normal School, State Teachers College, and State College - such has been the development of the Bloomsburg State College sin ce its inception as an Academy in 1839. A charter providing for the Bloomsburg Literary Institute was drawn up in 1856. The school was recognized as a State Normal School on February 19, 1869, but remained a private institutio n until May 22, 1916 when it was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The transition from Normal School to State Teachers College was completed in 1927 when permission was granted to offer a four year course of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. By an Act of th e General Assembly in January, 1960, the fourteen State Teachers Colleges of Pennsylvania became State Colleges. Authorization to offer courses leading to the Master of Education degree was given by the State Council of Education in the same year.
