Bautz, Chairman , Department of Health , Physical Education, and Athletics . 8 Puhl, a member of the Health and Physical Education staff at the college and active in numerous coaching assignments since 1966, was named following the recommendation of a Search and Screening Committee headed by Dr. Louis Mingrone of the BSC Biology Department and current head soccer coach. This action resulted from the November 24 resignation of William Sproule, who served as head football coach from 1971 through 1975. Sproule will remain on the Health and Physical Education Department staff. Puhl has been head track coach at the college for the past nine years and also served as cross country coach during the 1975 fall season. He previously served as assistant football coach under Russ Houk from 1966 through 1967 and under Jerry Denstorff from 1968 th(ough 1970. His track teams since 1970 have established an overall record of 76 wins and 8 losses while his 1975 cross country team posted an 8-3 mark. He will continue to serve as head track coach for the coming season. A native of Pottstown, Pennsyl- vania, Puhl was a three letter winner in football, swimming, and track and field while at Lock Haven State College from 1957 to 1961 . He began his coaching career at the Phoenixville Area Senior High School where he served as varsity track and field head coach for several years. He was named to the NAIA "Little All-American Team" in 1960 for football and was a Pennsylvania State College Champion in the 200 yard low hurdles in 1961. Joe DeMelfl Joe De Melfi, defensive coordinator, begins his third year as a member of the staff. He was recently appointed to the student I ife faculty as a resident advisor. An outstanding performer on his high school team of Berwick where he ). received numerous all-state honors, he matriculated at the University of Tennessee and later transferred to Delta State, participating in football at both schools. At the latter, he captained the Statesmen for two years and was the team's most valuable defensive player. He taught and coached at Berwick High prior to completing his Master's degree at Delta State. at the college. Haupt received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Shippensburg State where he was a varsity performer for three years as a center and middle linebacker. He previously taught and coached in the West Perry School District in Elliottsburg, Pennsylvania, and assisted with the football activities at Shippensburg State while working on his Master's. standout for the Bobcats in football and wrestling. He began his coaching career in the public schools of New York and later served on the coaching staffs of Ithaca College, Cornell University, and State University of New York at Cortland. His Master's degree was earned at Ithaca College. He was named head track coach at BSC in May of this year, replacing Puhl who relinquished that position to concentrate on football. He will have his work cut out as in 1975 the Huskies were 1-8 and in 1974, 10 The bright spot is that Puhl has a solid aggregation returning . He only loses three of last year's forty-eight lettermen through graduation. Key returnee is defensive back Lou Sannutti, who was named to the All-Pennsylvania Conference first team and honorable mention on the AII-ECAC squad. Wide receiver Tom Brennan, who led the team in the four categories of receiving, kickoff returns, punt returns, and scoring, can look forward to another good year along with another wide receiver Barry Staton who was right behind Brennan in the four above categories . Halfback John McCauley and linebacker Dave Hower will also play key roles. Since Puhl has been involved in completing his last year as head track coach, a position he has ~eld for the past ten years, he has had limited time for recruiting and it may take more than a year to turn things around appreciably. He previously served as assistant football coach at BSC from 1966-1970 and was particularly effective with the defensive backfield unit. He plans a complete regrouping of all football aspects at the college including a renewal of the alumni interest. He aims to instill a winning spirit into the team members that was evident in his successful track teams. Six of the eight conference opponents are with Bloomsburg in the eastern division of the Pennsylvania Conference with the other two competing in the western division. Wilkes College will be the only non-conference opposition. r- BSC 0 9 19 7 0 14 0 0 7 1975 Results Sh Ippensburg Lock Haven Wilkes West Chester Millersville Cheyney Kutztown East Stroudsburg Mansfield Record: Won 1 , Lost 8 Opp. 41 8 41 28 55 35 38 28 19 ,,. SOCCER 1976 Outlook This will be the second year of varsity soccer at Bloomsburg State College. Coming off of a respectable 4-5-1 season, BSC is continuing its building programs. With 18 returning lettermen and the expected competition from incoming freshman recruits, the 1976 soccer squad wi 11 be a well-built team that is young but deep In talent and experience. The 27 veterans returning for the 1976 season are comprised of 20 sophomores, 3 juniors, and 4 seniors. T'his squad and the more than 30 freshman candidates will be competing for the 30 positions on the 1976 editibn of the BSC soccer team. The competition for positions will be fierce and those individuals gaining a position will face the 1976 season With enthusiasm and the det'erminaUon to represent BSC well in a very competitive conference and noncpnference schedule. The 1976 season schedule has been increased from 10 to 12 contests with many regional soccer powers noted for their long tradition of winning 12 . soccer. BSC will be out to improve on the 1975 season and the Huskies should give a good account of themselves. Dr. Louis Mingrone Dr. Louis Mingrone is the head coach at the newest varsity team at Bloomsburg State College. The soccer team will enter into its second year of varsity competition in 1976. Mingrone, a Dormont, Pennsylvania native, received his degrees from Slippery Rock State College (where he lettered in soccer), Ohio University, and Washington State University. About 1962 she helped initiate and organize women's field hockey and basketbal I varsity sports and assumed the duties of coaching field hockey. With the inception in 1972 of swimming and tennis varsity sports, Ms. Wray assumed the duties of coordinator of women's intercollegiateathletics along with coaching tennis. Formerly from Pittsburgh, Pa., she earned her B.A. degree from Lake Erie College majoring in sociology and health and physical education. While at L.E.C., she played field hockey and basketball and had tennis instruction under Mary K. Browne, a former Wimbledon Doubles and National Singles Champion. Ms. Wray has participated in tournaments in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Her M.S. degree was earned at Penn State and additional credits at the University of Pittsburgh. 1976 Outlook Nineteen freshmen candidates, along with five returning veterans, give Coach Eleanor Wray prospects for one of her best teams since women's tennis became a varsity sport in 1972. The only player lost from last_year's team that compiled a 6-7 record is Anne McMunn, Williamsport, the number one player. The five top returnees are Debbie Sabatelli, Williamstown, N.J., Debbie Young, Glen Mills, Sue Purnell, Lewisburg, Laura Stoneback, Quakertown, and Amy Westcott, Newark, Delaware. Cathy Hornish, Eynon, Kelly Knarr, Muncy, Laurie R:eating, Montvale, N .J., and Cheryl Janiec, West Chester, are four of the freshmen candidates who have been called to the attention of Coach Wray by knowledgeable followers of the game. The large contingent of first-year c_andidates and the calibre of competition the Huskiettes have been facing indicate women's tennis has come a long way in four years. This past spring, five BSC players participated in the Pennsylvania State College Women's Tennis Competition with one df the doubles team reaching the quarter-finals. Overall since 1972, the netwomen have won 17 matches, lost 21, and tied one due to inclement weather.
