Bloomsburg University Field Hockey 1992 The offensive questions that were answered a year ago have moved to the other end of the field for 1992 as the Huskies will be forced to rebuild the midfield and back lines in front of their goal. Last season, en route to a 22-2 mark that included the club's fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship in the last five years, and a second-straight national tournament runnerup showing, the Huskies scored 75 goals while limiting the opposition to eight. In addition, Bloomsburg outshot its opponents 800-160 while losing only one regular-season contest. The country's top player in each of the last two years, Gisela Smith, is one of three departed All-Americans on defense, along with links Beth Bowman and Trudy Horst, forcing 15th-year head coach Jan Hutchinson to find new performers for those positions for the first time in four years. Senior Heather Lawall, junior Nicole Schiavello and sophomore Shelley Smith provide a good base on which to build. Bloomsburg should be very strong in the goal as the Huskies return two highly-touted keepers. Senior Anita Stum started last season for Bloomsburg but was replaced in the final 12 games by sophomore Lori Hippensteel. Regardless of who is in the net, the tandem allowed only eight goals in 1991 (0.33 goals per game) including 16 shutouts and are expected to keep opposing offenses frustrated once again. Rachel Trinidad also returns to provide added depth at goal. Returning All-American Denise Miller, who led the team in goals last season with 31, will be the only senior on a relatively young, but experienced front line. Miller pas a three-year total of 62 goals for the Huskies . Joining her will be sophomores Chris Fink, Bridget Bates and Michelle McFalls . The sophomore threesome gained valuable experience last season, providing 19 goals and 17 assists. Fink, Bates, and McFalls were able to step in and contribute immediately in 1991, and Jan Hutchinson expects better balance and more scoring opportunities from them this season. Shelley Smith is the only returning link. She started in every game last year scoring once and handing out four assists. Help for Smith on the link line is a big concern as two people must move up and take the place of Bowman and Horst. Smith provides good qickness to the line for a consistent transition game. Others expected to contribute heavily this season are senior Donna Abbott and juniors Gretchen Adams, Kris Hertzler and Chris Walton. They will be vying for starting positions after seeing considerable action last year. Adam's is expected to perform once again for the Huskies after sitting out last season with a knee injury. She scored one goal and recorded one assist in limited action in 1990, but scored three times in 1989. Hertzler and Walton combined for four goals and two assists in 1991. Shirley Powell and Chris Basalyga are highly-touted freshmen and are probable starters following preseason drills. The Huskies have played in the conference and national tournaments in each of the last eleven years . They have captured six PSAC crowns while winning four national championships and placing in the top three nationally on six other occassions. The team must play as a unit early on and provide solid defensive support to compliment a young but talented offense. .I Jan Hutchinson is entering her 15th season in charge of a program that has won four national titles and six conference championships in the past eleven seasons. While at Bloomsburg, her teams have posted winning records in each of her 14 previous seasons and have built an overall record of 239-3716 for a winning percentage of .818. Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed several outstanding seasons and have won 16 or more games on 11 occasions. Her teams won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1987 and have also registered five national runnerup finishes including last season. In addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991 and have garnered three runnerup showings. Three athletes won All-American honors last season bringing the total under Hutchinson to 15 performers who have combined to win 27 All-American awards. Hutchinson also serves as head coach for the Huskies' highly successful softball program which placed third at last year"s NCAA Division Il national championships. Her teams also placed second nationally in 1991 and third in 1990. In 1981-82, she had the rare distinction of leading two teams to national titles in the same year as the field hockey team won the AIAW Division Ill crown and the softball team duplicated the feat in the spring. Her softball team has appeared in the national tournament in each of the last 13 years and won eight-consecutive PSAC titles from 1983-1990. Individually, her players have enjoyed much recognition in softball as well with many winning conference and regional honors and 19 players earning 30 All-American awards. Sharon O'Keefe is in her 11th season as an assistant coach with the field hockey program in addition to serving as the Huskies' head lacrosse coach. She joined the physical education staff in 1982 and is a 1980 graduate of Trenton State College where she was a member of the Lions' 1977 national championship field hockey unit. The lacrosse program has made progressive improvement under O'Keefe's direction and won its first PSAC championship and played in the ECAC Division Il title game in 1991. Former Huskies' two-sport standout Alicia Hazzard will serve as an assistant coach for the third time this season. The 1989 Bloomsburg graduate performed for the field hockey team for four years earning all-conference honors in 1988 and was named to the All-American team in 1988. She scored 19 goals and assisted on 12 others for the club. As a member of the lacrosse team, she was an integral part of the Huskies' defense which helped the club reach the PSAC playoffs in each of her years on the team. She was an all-conference lacrosse selection in 1989. I: :: : :::::::::::::BP:s~::ii::rnti~::~1~:::~Ht§BH1::,,::,,,, No. Name Class Pos. 1 Chris Pierman Fr. A 2 Michelle McFalls So. NL Fr.
