'82 FOOTBALL Introducing George J. Landis Head Coach George J. Landis, assistant coach at Dartmouth College for the last four years and former defensive back at Penn State University, was named head football coach at Bloomsburg State College in January of this year. He replaced R. Clark Boler, who was the head coach for the past two seasons. Landis, 33, a native of Linwood, NJ, helped guide Dartmouth to an Ivy League co-championship with Yale last season and worked with the Big Green defense that led the entire ECAC, in team defense, allowing just 13.7 points per game. The new coach lettered for three years at Penn State and played in the 1969 and 1970 Orange Bowls in the Nittany Lions' backfield. In 1970 he was named to the All-East defensive team and was also honored as South Jersey's College "Athlete of the Year." He went to Penn State from Mainland Regional High School in Linwood, NJ where he was a varsity starter for all four years and gained All-American honors. He also played varsity basketball for three years and baseball for four years. He holds both the Bachelor of Science in education and Master of Education degrees from Penn State. His coaching experience started at Penn State where he assisted on the Nittany Lions' staff while earning his graduate degree. He was the defensive backfield coach at Villanova and Cornell Universities before taking a head coaching position at Mainland Regional H.S., where he served for two years. In 1978 he joined the Dartmouth coaching staff as defensive backfield coach. ON GEORGE LANDIS ...................... . "Among the young coaches that I have come across in my experience, I regard him as one with very high potential to be a head football coach at the college level. J'/1 go one step further and say that a better head coach_prospect will be difficult to find." - Joe Yukica, Head Football Coach, Dartmouth College "George Landis is one of the brightest young coaches in the East. He has been successful in everything he has done. Based on his versatile athletic background and his commitment to football, I feel very confident that he will be successful at Bloomsburg State College." - Joe Paterno, Head Football Coach, Penn State University What's expected in 1982 Optimism and patience! Those two words are the key to the 1982 football season for the Huskies, according to head coach George Landis. "We're going to be very young, so there will be some mistakes while we are learning together. I'm sure we'll have a lot of enthusiasm and hustle and the staff is really optimistic about what's going to happen. However, we must have the patience to let things develop," he commented. Landis has been given the task of turning around a program that has won only one game in the pasttwo seasons. One ofthe coaching staff's major goals will be to improve a defense that allowed opponents an average of 43.5 points per game a year ago. Defensive backs Greg Stone and Joe Carr will give the secondary some experience. Stone looked outstanding in pre-season practice a year ago, but was forced to sit out the year after suffering an injury in the season opener at Ithaca. Carr, and the team's second leading tackler, Steve Fisher saw a lot of playing time in 1981 and, along with some talented freshmen, should make this area the most competitive for starting berths. Linebackers Mike Miller and Jack Hess are two veterans at a position where Landis expects to use some newcomers. Miller was the club's leading tackler last season, while Hess impressed the staff in the Huskies' spring drills. Tackle Dave Pepper is the only defensive lineman with any experience. He was second on the team in quarterback sacks a year ago. PIAA "Big 33" performer and Lakeland High School standout Steve DoMonoski and Frank Sheptock of Mt. Carmel H.S. should see a lot of action at linebacker while Sheldon Pennington of Cedar Cliff H.S. could form an end combination with Pepper. Pennington's versatility may allow him to also play tight end where he was one of the state's top ten high school receivers statistically at the end of last season. Honorable Mention All-American and All-Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division selection, Mike Blake, leads the returnees on offense for the Huskies. Last year he caught 55 passes for 731 yards. Blake and another All-PC East choice, wide receiver Stan Kucewicz, who caught 31 passes for 410 yards, helped BSC top the league in passing with an average of 180.4 yards/game. In addition to Pennington, the receiving corps could be enhanced by the addition of speedster Angelo Martin of Marian Catholic H.S. Guards Jim Zaccheo and John DeMartino are the base on which Landis will build the offensive line. Zaccheo was an All-PC pick in 1981. Newcomers will be needed to overcome a "severe lack of numbers on the line." The top candidate appears to be York Vo-Tech H.S. product Mark Landis. BSC will have to fill a major void at quarterback created by the graduation of All-PC East second team pick, Kurt Werkheiser, who was the PC East's top passer in 1981. Several newcomers will vie for starting backfield spots and will attempt to improve upon the conference's worst rushing attack (79.0 yards/game). Leading the pack will be Vernon Rochester (Haddon Heights H.S., NJ) who rushed for over 1100 yards last season, John Hornyak (State College H.S.) who ran for 1150 yards last season, and Mike Connor (Forest Grove, OR) who contributed over 1500 yards to his school's running attack last season. Whitehall High School's Mark Bonchak scored 35 touchdowns over the past two seasons while Dave Shuga caught 27 passes and gained more than 700 yards for undefeated Berwick High School. Landis will pick a starting backfield from over 20 candidates with one purpose in mind, "We've got to get a running game we can rely on. We want to develop a balanced attack and, above all, eliminate turnovers." The Staff LOU MARANZANA - DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/LINEBACKERS Coached linebackers at Dartmouth for past two years and worked with "Big Green" defense that led entire ECAC in team defense (13.7 ppg) a year ago. Former head coach at Chaminade (FL) High School. Played defensive end and tight end as an undergraduate at Dartmouth. JOE DeMELFI - OFFENSIVE LINE . Former assistant coach at SSC returns this season. Was named Delta State University's and PIAA "Big 33" MVP as a player. Currently serves as Bloomsburg's Assistant Dean of Student Life. JOE GEIGER - DEFENSIVE LINE Entering his fourth year as a member of the SSC staff. Played quarterback for the Huskies in early 70's and accounted for 21 touchdowns in 1972-73. Still holds four SSC career passing ~ records. JOE GUBERNOT - RECEIVERS First year at Bloomsburg. Served as head coach at Shamokin (PA) High School for past five years compiling a33-24-1 mark. Led Indians to 1975 Eastern Conference "AAA" Championship. BOB GUTSHALL - OFFENSIVE BACKFIELD Returned to staff last season after seven year absence. He previously coached at SSC from 1970-74 after gaining Honorable Mention Little All-American honors at Lock Haven as an undergraduate. FRANK WILLIAMS - DEFENSIVE BACKS Was a SSC assistant from 1976-80 before joining Bucknell staff last year. He was AllPennsylvania Conference selection at Kutztown I _ where he was recently induct€d into the Bears· v "'"i_t . Ron Morgan, Equipment Manager Paul Slocum, Head Trainer Key Returnees MIKE BLAKE TIGHT END 6-2 220 SR . Team's leading receiver a year ago , caught 55 , passes for 731 yards, twice on ECAC Weekly Honor Roll selection 1st team PC East choice in 1981, AP-Honorable Mention All-American . Was a PC East second team selection last year. DAVE PEPPER DEFENSIVE TACKLE 6-4 220 JR. Ranked second on the team in quarterback sacks last season. Will have to stand out early to lead very young, inexperienced line corps. GREG STONE STRONG SAFETY JR. 6--0 190 Looked outstanding in pre-season last year before being injured in first game atlthaca. Sat out the remainder of the season. Will solidify already good secondary. JIM ZACCHEO GUARD 5-10 220 SR. Stable player over the past few seasons. He was a PC East second team pick last year.
