When Coach Ron Puhl took over the reigns of the Huskies in 1976, he vowed to turn around the football fortunes of BSC. He has systematically done that after an opening season's record of 2-7 followed by a 4-5 mark two years ago. With over 32 lettermen returning, Puhl has a fine nucleus of solid performers to shoot for his second consecutive winning season . "Although we've lost about ten players through graduation, we should be solid again on defense and an improvement should be evident in our offensive line," he states. "The latter should help both our running and passing game." Puhl will be counting on his All-American candidate, running back Mike Marucci, to help keep the momentum going. As a 6'2", 205-pound junior, he gained 1169 yards in nine games (8 TD's) to finish fifth nationally among NCAA Division II rushers. He was named to the first teams of the Pennsylvania Conference and southern division of ECAC and received honorable mention on the AP selections. In his sophomore year, he rushed for 805 yards in eight games. Marucci will share captain honors with another All· Conference performer, linebacker Howie Gulick. At 5'11 ", 210-pounds, he led the Huskies in tackles in his junior year. Other All-Conference returnees include wide receiver Ed Bug no, defensive tackle Bob Schwalm, and defensive end Kurt Pettis. In addition to Marucci and Bugna, four other returning offensive starters are 6'3", 190-pound flanker Duane Frantz; 6'3", 225 guard Mike McGuire; 6'0", 212 center Bill Lund; 5'11", 180 quarterback Rick Knisely who led the eastern division of the PC with 6.3 completions per game. Joe Hepp, a 5'9", 175 back who was the team's second leading rusher (24.5 yds. per game) should see considerable action. Both Bugna and Frantz finished third in the division in catches averaging 2.2 per game. Six foot three inch, 265 lb. senior tackle Carl Bowen, also a previous starter, could have a great year. Returning defensive starters to compliment Gulick, Pettis and Schwalm are 5'11 ", 190 linebacker Dale Hockenberry; 5'11" 205 tackle Sal LoBue; 6'0", 220 end Chuck Muller; 6'0", 215 linebacker Dave Reidenouer; 5'11", 180 back Paul Ziegenfuss. Punter Kurt Werkheiser, who as a freshman finished second in the division averaging 37.8 yards per kick, is back. Freshman Pete McKenna will do the place kicking. Key losses through graduation were All-conference performers defensive back Chris Betterly and linebacker Doug Pfautz along with other starters including offensive guard Jim Linn, fullback Dan Mccallum, tight end Steve Long, and defensive back Rob Keyser. BSC opens its 1979 slate away against powerful Ithaca College on September 8. Home opponents will be Shippensburg (Sept. 15), Wilkes (Oct. 6--Homecoming), West Chester (Oct. 13), Cheyney (Oct. 27--Parents Weekend), and East Stroudsburg (Nov. 10). The balance of away games to complete the 10-opponent schedule are: Lock Haven (Sept. 22), Mansfield (Sept. 29), Millersville (Oct. 20), and Kutztown (Nov. 3). Bloomsburg is a NCAA Division Ill team in football and all the oppone-nts are the same except East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, and West Chester, who are Division II and permitted a spring practice session. FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF Kneeling (L. to R.): Eric Magargle, Irv Wright, Frank Williams, Carl Hinkle. Standing: William Wolfe, Joe DeMelfi, Bill Derr, Ron Puhl, Joe Geiger, Dick Lichte! and Dan McCall um. HEAD COACH RONALD PUHL is entering his fourth year as head football coach at Bloomsburg State College. After seasons of 2-7 in 1976 and 4-5 in 1977, last year Puhl and his staff led the Huskies to a 6-4 mark for the first winning season at the college since 1970. Fans have shown overwhelming approval of the Husky brand of football. Puhl has been able to transmit the same enthusiasm to his football charges that proved so successful in his previous nine years as head track coach and as assistant football coach from 1960-70 under coaches Russ Houk and Jerry Denstorff. His track teams from 1970-75 established an overall dual mark of 76 wins against only eight losses. At Phoenixville Area Senior High School before coming to BSC, he served as head track coach, backfield football coach and gymnastics coach. A native of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Puhl was a three letter winner in football, swimming, and track and field while at Lock Haven State College from 1957 to 1961. His Master's degree was earned at Ithaca College. He also serves as BSC's head track and field coach. ERIC MAGARGLE is in his second year working with the JV defense. Two years ago he starred for the Kutztown State Golden Bears as a defensive end. WILLIAM WOLFF brings a total of over 30 years of football experience to the offensive backfield this fall. Wolff played two years at both Pitt University and Kutztown State College. He has a long coaching career including three years at St. Clair Area H.S., and six years at Danville H.S. IRVIN WRIGHT, in his third year at SSC, will be assisting in coaching linebackers and defensive linemen. Wright spent his college career at Dodge City Community College for two years as a linebacker and offensive guard and two years at SUNY/Buffalo as a linebacker after which he remained a year as the head freshman coach . From 1970 to January 1977, he was an assistant coach in charge of linebackers and defensive linemen at the University of Toledo. RICHARD LICHTEL is in his fourth year working with the quarterbacks. His name is easily recognized as the former signal caller who established many SSC passing records in 1967 when he teamed up with current pro stars Bob Tucker and Stan Kucharsky. Lichtel has also coached seven years at Mechanicsburg High School (PA) and spent two years as a player/coach in the Seaboard League. After graduating in 1968, Lichtel played one year with the Baltimore Colts Farm Club in the ACFL. WILLIAM DERR, also in his fourth year, has, in addition to being assistant offensive line coach, the duties of head freshman coach and is in charge of scouting. A previous standout offensive lineman for the Huskies in the late 60's, Derr is presently a teacher at Southern Columbia H.S. where he has had four years of experience as head line coach and offensive coordinator. JOE GEIGER, wide receivers and JV coach, is in his first year for the Huskies.
