Carmel Southampton Altoona Altoona Woodbridge, N. J. OUTLOOK Thirty-six upperclassmen, including 20 lettermen, along with 27 freshmen, reported for pre-season practice on August 31. The big problem facing Coach Blair and his assist::mts is developing replacements for key positions vacated by the following '63 grads: John Sills and Trevor Carpenter, guards; Gary Stackhouse and Don Denick, tackles; Bob Christina, center; Dick Rohrer, quarterback; Moses Scott, halfback; Ken Robbins, utility back. Returning lettermen Larry Tironi and Joe Casarella will be alternating at the center slot. Adequate support of guards is available in the hulking forms of Jack Currie, Lou Ciocca, Bob Letcavage, Dick Greco, and John Mulka to further discourage the opposition at the center of the line. Defensive tackles should rate well with the offensive tackle position being a question mark at the moment. Gary Barnaba, Bart Wilenski, Mel Max, Neil Mercando and Jack Rankin will be going "all out" to erase any question marks at this position. Despite the return of S lettermen - Dick Davala, Jeff Ward, George Cunningham, Jerry Doto, and Gary McManimen, a pair of really strong ends is needed. A great deal will depend on the ability of Bob Kurzinsky to look good in a starting role of quarterback. Replacing Dick Rohrer and Ken Robbins 1s no easy task as experience and depth is needed. Can Freel Stoicheff make up for the loss of Moses Sco tt at left halfback and will Dick Boerner show continued improvement at right halfback? These are two important questions facing Coach Blair and backfield Coach Mentzer. Gary Sprout will be back at fullback and will be spelled by Roy Resavage. Coach Blair's Maroon and Gold gridders face their usual tough opponents in the Eastern Division of the Pennsylvania State College Athletic Conference-West Chester, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, and Mansfield. Lock Haven, in the Western Division, has frequently posed a thorny problem, and, outside the conference, the Monarchs of King's College will be trying to win their first game against Bloomsburg in a ten -year relationship which will be terminated at the end of this season. In spite of the lack of extensive experience, both the coaching staff and players are anxious to prove they have the "makings" for a winning season. THE COACHING STAFF WALTER R. BLAIR, HEAD COACH Walt Blair will direct the Husky grid machine for the seventh year after serving two years as assistant coach at Bloomsburg. Blair was an outstanding athlete at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, lettering in football, baseball, and basketball. Military service in the Army during World War II ended a brief stay at Temple University. While in the Service, Blair played football with the Eighth Armored Division and Camp Polk Teams. In September, I 946, he entered West Chester S.C. to begin an outstanding career in college competition under Coach Glenn Killinger. It was during this period that the Rams became one of the nation's small college gridiron powers. Blair played in three postseason bowl games, seeing service in both the line and backfield. An able and enthusiastic competitor, Blair used his know-how to good advantage while coaching at N eshaminy, Jenkintown, and Chambersburg High Schools. His teams rolled up 30 victories, 13 losses, and 1 tie. In the Fall of 1955, Coach Blair received a call to come to Bloomsburg as Assistant Coach. Jack Yohe, then head man of the Huskies, had ·observed Blair's prowess firsthand when Yohe served as backfield coach at West Chester under Killinger. Blair's record as head coach since 1957 is 23-21-3. ***** 1963 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Opponent Date Place Time Sept. 14 Scrimmage Susque. Un. A 2:00 p.m. Sept. 21 Lock Haven S. C. A 2:00 p.m. s.
