Mechanicsburg Wm. Penn, Harrisburg HUSKIES HEAD MAN Jack Yohe, who is beginning his third season as driver of the Husky grid sled, was well known in State Teachers College football circles before becoming head football coach at Bloomsburg. He served as backfield coach at West Chester under the astute Glen Killinger for five years before accepting an appointment to the faculty at the "Friendly College." Yohe learned his football lessons at Jersey Shore High School, and he played standout football at Lock Haven State Teachers College, where he graduated in 1938. He began his teaching career at Biglerville High School. World War II interrupted that career in 1942, and he served with the U. S. Navy for a period of 46 months, being separated in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant. Following his separation from the service, he taught for one year at Upper Merion High School before accepting an assignment at West Chester State Teachers College. A confirmed "T" formation man, Yohe developed a hard-hitting, fighting ball club in his first two seasons at Bloomsburg. The 1953 Huskies won six and lost two, but the personable young mentor is determined to better that slate this season. He is a stickler for fundamentals and conditioning- two hallmarks of Bloomsburg football since 1946. J 1954 OUTLOOK If any gang of footballers have their sights set on copping the 1954 championship of the Pennsylvania State Teachers College Conference that outfit is the Bloomsburg State Teachers College Huskies. Not that Coach Jack Yohe's squad is loaded with veteran talent, for such is not the case, but the Hilltoppers have promised Coach Yohe and his staff to return the loop crown to Bloomsburg for the first time since 1951. The Huskies have only four conference gamesMansfield, California, West Chester, and Lock Havenand three of them are to be played away from the fnendly confines of air-conditioned Mt. Olympus-but four Husky victories could easily spell "CHAMPIONSHIP" in the circuit's complicated rating system. However, there's a lot of football to be played before this goal can be realized. t 1 Pre-season workouts find scrimmages with nearby colleges have demonstrated that the Huskies will have two hefty, well-drilled forward walls, several sets of speedy backs, and some capable reserve strength. Ends continue to be Coach Jack Y ohe's biggest headache despite the return of three 1953 varsity lettermenBob Cumens, Bob Stroup, and Dick Strine. Sam Belle, a regular wingman last year, decided to give up football in order to put more time on his studies. Tackles are beefy, tough, and ready to go-Don Thomas, John Panichello, and Harry Hughes-all won their letters last year. With some help from outstanding freshmen like Joe Wascavage, Chick DeFebo, and John Rogus, they should be able to hold their own against all comers. Guards also appear strong despite the fact that only three regulars are back from last year-Tom Persing, Frank Kaminski, and Joe Kwak. Charley Pope, a big senior, has been moved into the interior of the line after three seasons as an end. Newcomers Bob Gore and Leo Mulhall, two ex-GI's should help. There is adequate depth at center where two 1953 starters hold forth-Eddie Connolley and Chuck Skiptunas. Dave Johns and Frank Prusch, two talented freshmen, are ready for reserve duty. Barring injuries to key backfield personnel, the Huskies should have one of the best backfields in the conference. Jimmy Browning, an all-conference selection as a sophomore and one of the nation's leading twenty ground-gainers will spearhead a flashy quartet. Mike Lashendock and Bob Dipipi will pilot the Huskies' T-motored attack from the quarterback slot. Eddie Watts, a promising speedster from Jenkintown, will likely man the left-halfback spot, while rugged Harvey Boughner will operate at fullback. Other Husky threats are Chuck Casper, Alex Boychuck Bob Groover, and Joe Malczyk plus several speedy freshmen. No one realizes better than Coach Yohe the tremendous task cut out for the Huskies this season, but the Husky tutor is keeping his fingers crossed and hoping for the best. All in all, the Huskies know the size of the job ahead, and they are determined that every game will bring forth their best effort.
